Probably the best

Probably the best two episodes. Shocked at the brother's fate. But maybe I shouldn't be. Also five was awesome in both episodes. Disappointed the GA didn't put up a fight at all. You're clones!

reply

Shocked and disappointed. Are they getting rid of 4? How can he come back from that?

reply

It makes sense, when considering the old days. When a new king or emperor came to power all the competition and their loyal minions were killed. This helped to ensure retaining power. I was shocked that his brother was killed because he helped him. But remember when he and the Raza were ambushed? The guy Ryo/Four spoke with said only he, Ryo/Four, and his brother knew they were meeting. Yet somehow they were ambushed. *Someone* betrayed him. When the Ryo/Four discovered him dead, I think ruled him out. I don't think Hiro was really loyal to him. Even when Five "rescued" him, he was just hanging out in his room. He seemed perfectly fine. You'd think that if he really wanted to help Ryo/Four he'd be a little more distressed about being locked in his room. So, I think his brother betrayed him. With Ryo/Four being the smart guy he is, he knew he couldn't keep him alive.

reply

It is clear that no one betrayed them. Seers help the empress using their ability to predict the future.

reply

Nobody betrayed him. The precogs basically told his mother his every move. Two figured it out before they stormed the palace.

reply

That doesn't mean the brother wasn't in on it. Again, when his mother took over he didn't seem distressed or anything. He seemed totally fine even though he knew Ryo/Four was on his way (most likely) to his death. It wasn't until he went to the court that he actually seemed to care.

reply

His mother had him locked up with guards loyal to her. He's not a fighter, what was he going to do? He had nothing to do with it.

reply

It wasn't until he went to the court that he actually seemed to care.

Because we didn't see him in between his meeting with Ryo and then.

He had the plan, he had his loyal people on the ships in orbit, it was his mother who locked him away, destroyed the ships, and killed everyone who was loyal to him to make it look like Ryo tried to kill him and begin a coup for the throne.

Then Five came along and took out the guards and released him so he could go to the court and have his mother imprisoned for what she had done.

reply

That doesn't mean the brother wasn't in on it.

That doesn't make sense.. . If the brother was in on it, he never would have supported Four and publicly given the throne to him.

Chill. I already posted the showrunner's explanation. No need to debate this.

Possible yes, but I hope not. Whilst they do make very serious and dangerous adversaries for the Raza, I just couldn't imagine the writers being able to consistently write good ways for the Raza to outsmart them each time. Unless they were killed off, the seers would have to win, or would just appear bumbling fools.

reply

I'm upset Four had his brother killed. I was looking forward to their reunion the whole series. Why would he kill him when they built up how much he loved his brother the whole series, it made no sense. I also don't want Four gone from the Raza, even though they did build up that he would reclaim the thrown. I feel like we're losing the core crew.

reply

Will there be anyone left for season 3? lol

reply

At this point, doesn't really look like it. Jay has been watching way too many episodes of Games of Thrones. I think they're basically down to 5 members.

reply

okay guys, correct me if I'm wrong.

In the episode where the Raza accidentally travels to the alternate dimension where Ryo Ishida has retaken his throne, isn't he told that in the alternate verse he spared his brother and made him his adviser, but the brother goes on to foster trouble and starts a rebellion against Ishida Ryo? or was that someone else?

reply

You are right. Alternate Portia Lin and Boone told Four that the brother was pushing for democracy. Of course the Emperor would not like that. I think that had something to do with Four ordering his brother's death. Not to mention the fact that with the brother still around, some might still support him as the true emperor.

reply

I think that was probably part of this, but I think he also knew that he *had* to kill Hiro's mother. Simple banishment would allow her too much latitude in fomenting trouble for Ryo, and she had too many allies to risk imprisonment - she wouldn't last a week there, in the sense that she'd get broken out. And once he killed her... well, that would make an enemy of Hiro. No matter how much you love your step-brother, having him kill your mother isn't going to sit well. Hiro might accept it in the moment, but that would gnaw at him over the years until oh hey, rebellion.

I'm confused by the step-brother bit. I always assumed they were half-brothers. How did Hiro get the throne if he's only the former Emperor's step-son? Doesn't make any sense. Even with Ryo being out of the picture, it would go to an uncle or a cousin or something. (Assuming Japanese dynastic descent works remotely similar to European, of course.)

I'm not sure about Japanese dynastic system, but I know for sure that the Muslim dynastic system did not work like that. Often times, wives, even concubines of the sultan/ruler would plot and make political maneuvers to ensure that their child would become the next ruler.

Even if the Jap dynastic system did not work like that, there is no reason that the same thing would be followed by the show, because we're in the far future now. The show doesn't have to follow the Japanese dynastic system down.

reply

Hiro and Ryo have the same father/emperor. Otherwise, Hiro's mother would have no legitimate claim to the throne. Anyways, Hiro's mother cultivated the faction that supported her rule. Hiro was just a puppet, with his mother as the regent ruling in his name. Of course, he gets to strut around as the Emperor and Commander of his own ship and fleet. Yay!

But they kept referring to each other as STEPbrother, not HALFbrother. Which would make one of them (likely Hiro) not the old Emperor's son. Now, it's entirely possible that Hiro was adopted to the point of being in the line of succession, but it just seems like it would've been far simpler to have them be half-brothers.

Agreed. These were 2 of the best episodes yet. I see a lot of people complaining about this twist or that event but I am just enjoying the heck out of the ride.

This is a really fun show.

If killed that wipes out the memories :)

reply

That's the in show reason they gave. Hopefully them retaining their memories pans out, but they have a habit of dropping loose ends. In reality the clones should of attempted to fight back to take in mass murderers.

reply

I agree and I would go even further than that and say the final three episodes of Season 2 of Dark Matter were the best episodes so far and I am really looking forward to seeing Season 3 now and hate waiting until next year. Hopefully Season 3 is as good as Season 2 was so the show can be renewed for another season 'cause there are way too many good shows that get cancelled early these days.

I am still missing Lost Girl, Haven and Continuum. 😞
