Anyone else excited

Anyone else excited for this movie? I'm glad they're making a movie based on FTM transitioning since the mainstream media never really talks about it.

reply

Yeah, I am really looking forward to Elle Fanning's performance in this.

Saw a presceening of this a few weeks ago. I really liked it. The performances were on point and the feedback from the rest of the audience was mostly positive!

Nice to hear that! Does Elle Fanning have the clear lead role in this movie or is this status basically shared with the other two women?

Elle does play a trans teen named Ray. Ray's mom is Naomi Watts and Naomi's mom is Susan Sarandon who is married to Linda Emond. There is no lead of the movie. If anything I would say that Naomi Watt's character is the central character. Which works very well. The movie is about Elle's character who needs both parents to sign a parental consent form in order to begin taking T. The movie itself is how the family reacts to Ray wanting a permanent transition as well as (without giving too much away) the pursuit of Ray's father. It was very reminiscent of The Kids Are All Right. It's more of a family drama as opposed to a movie about a transitioning teen even though that is at the center of the drama. If any of that made sense.

Ok, thanks for the information.

Yeah, when I first heard about this movie it immediately reminded me of The Kids Are All Right.

That being said the best part of the movie is the writing. Each scene tackles a HUGE issue or topic and asks really important questions about today's society. And yet almost every scene is hilarious. But then as soon as each scene ends you're left with this "Oh." sensation that is rare to come by in other films. It's wonderful. My friend and I laughed or smiled through the majority of the film.

The movie had no title when we saw it though. It was called About Ray when the title came on screen but then we talked in the post discussion about other possible names for the movie. The one that I liked was called "All Together Now" which I think represents the movie as a whole a little better and the title About Ray makes you think it's just about Ray.

That's great! Do you think that the movie has the potential to become an indie surprise indie hit during Oscar season, the same way as The Kids Are All Right was a few years ago?

Yeah, the working title of the movie was Three Generations. But that one was way too generic and Susan Sarandon even said in an interview that she would take suggestions for a new title. All Together Now sounds definitely better than Three Generations.

reply

Totally! I see it getting a lot of nominations. I don't think it will win as big as The Kids Are Alright (Especially with Carol coming out this fall) but I don't see it being a snub.

All Together Now I liked for two reasons. 1. It could mean the family coming together
2. It could also mean the physical transition
Regardless I think All Together Now is the better title
Three Generations is what they called the movie when they were talking about it so I doubt they have solidified a name yet.

That's a very good point. Carol is being distributed by TWC as well, so it could be possible that they will give priority to that movie during the Oscar campaign.

But I think the fact that they retitled Three Generations to About Ray could mean that they are going to focus the promotion of the movie around Elle's character. They always like to highlight "breakout performances" during awards season. So I think that Elle Fanning could be an obvious candidate for that.

Yeah, I totally agree. It makes total sense the way you are describing it. Maybe you should have shared your suggestion with them. 

Very true! I guess we will see come this winter!

And oh we did we all talked very in depth about the possible titles for the movie.
As well as how casting a Cisgender person as a Transgender person could possibly effect the films release.

Yeah, that's obviously a controversial subject. I think that overall it helps the chances of the movie to have a more known young actress attached to a project like this. But I can totally understand why the transgender community isn't as happy about Ray being portrayed by a cisgender actress.

reply

It was a discussion that couldn't end. Because the movie is already finished. and so the discussion became larger than just this one movie. So we all just had to accept it and move on wether we were ok with it or not.

reply

It was a discussion that couldn't end.

Was this discussion just between your friends? Or was it somehow part of the screening?

reply

Yeah! Sorry I should have mentioned this at the top. But after the screening select members of the audience had a talkback with a representative of the film.

Ah, it's nice that they engaged in that type of debate.

reply

That is soooo awesome!!!!! I'm a diehard Naomi Watts fan so I am so excited to see it!!!!! How is her performance in it? By the looks of the trailer, all three of the characters have such awesome chemistry together which is awesome!

The mainstream media never talks about it? this stuff is 24/7 in the media. These people making tv nowadays are so annoying trying to brainwash you into their mindset they just keep insisting and insisting with their bs. We know, we get it, it's hard to be a transgender, jesuschrist. I'm not going to watch this film simply because I don't like when people with an agenda tries to convince me of something. There's a wonderful documentary on transgender called growing up trans or something like that

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/growing-up-trans/

go watch it if you want to know about it, but don't let the media jam their version and their opinion into your skull, they're a parasyte.

Ugh, omg, I'm so glad someone else notices this... Surely someone will say "transphobia", but I don't care.

It will be an interesting movie to watch, though. Plus, it has Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon!

I hope life isnt a big joke, because I don't get it - Jack Handey :/

reply

no, i am not excited. inevitably the interesting movies about these kinds of issues don't get made by hollywood.

reply

Agreed.

reply

I remember crying my eyes out after watching Boys Don't Cry so I'm hoping this one will be less depressing. But yes, excited.

reply

It's a dramedy. So I think you can expect them to treat the subject matter in a more light hearted way.

reply

I am very excited about the film. I am a mother of a 13 y/o FTM trans child. The description of the movie is very similar to my own.

I think it's important that these movies are made, and hopefully depict as truthfully as Hollywood allows, the struggles parents and families face when their child comes out, and the obstacles we face coming to terms with our children, loving them unconditionally, and helping them cope in a world that is not accepting.

I'm sure some people are unhappy, or may have a different perspective than mine, but as a parent of a FTM transgender child, I have felt alone in my journey. I hope this helps others like me to open up doors and awareness for our children.
