What happened to this film?
It was getting a lot of buzz then silence?
shareI guess that due to the mixed reviews they realized that movie is not strong enough to survive during awards season and therefore decided to release it sometime next year. It's disappointing, but I think it was the right decision.
What makes this years Oscar race so diffult is also the fact that there are other high profile LGBT movies, which can be considered direct rivals to About Ray. The Danish Girl is also a movie about a trans character, which got better reviews. And then the Weinstein Company also has the lesbian themed Carol under their belt, which got universal acclaim. So I think it makes total sense that TWC would focus their attention on Carol and therefore move About Ray to next year.
Here is also an interesting article where they talk about how competitive this Oscar season has been and how a lot of candidates have tanked at the box office. Which might explain why they decided to move About Ray to a different date.

The Weinsteins pulled it the week of it was suppose to be released due to the mixed reviews it got at TIFF.
shareHere is a picture that the director of the movie posted in late April on her instagram. Seems like they decided to re-edit the movie after the mixed reviews at TIFF. That explains the silence of the last months about the project. Let's hope that they fixed some of the apparent issues of the movie.
