Some of that financial success was being able to be flexible with their decisions and adjusting on the fly. Marvel also appears to understand timing and sequence because they appear to be disciplined enough to stay with their plans and trust their market research.
Cases in point: Edgar Wright and Ed Norton. If Edgar Wright had produced Ant-Man the way he wanted and when it was supposed to have happened the MCU would be drastically different. Ed Norton's The Hulk character arc would have also been very different because the type of Banner we had then would have had to have been a totally different Banner by now. IN some ways maybe that would have been a more dynamic Hulk. Who knows?
Bottom line is this whole result took a lot of effort and focus to maintain success. Marvel/Disney weren't chasing dollars and to me that was the biggest error by Warner/DC. I truly believe that Marvel was outmaneuvered by Warner/DC in getting Aquaman and Wonder-Woman to the big screen ahead of a Namor/Sub-Mariner and Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.
On the Captain Marvel front I think Marvel/Disney doesn't get enough credit for their admittedly strong roster of female characters that were ever present within the MCU.
I for one celebrate their success and am excited as to where Marvel/Disney is taking this whole endeavor.

I'm curious to see how the GA would react to a Namor film with Aquaman already out.
