So is this a good list of minimally necessary MCU movies in order to "get" the whole story?

This wouldn't be a terrible marathon.... Just 12 movies.

Iron Man (2008)
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
The Avengers (2012)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)

I'm trying to figure out if anything integral is missing due to the movies I removed. We aren't introduced to Hawkeye's off-the-books family from Age of Ultron, but that's irrelevant. We see him with his family at the opening of Endgame and at that point it's no longer important whether or not they are hidden.

Also, I'm not sure if I should include Dr. Strange, because he has SUCH a presence in Infinity War.... I haven't seen Dr. Strange yet (other than a few scenes), but I wasn't lost at any point in terms of his character. The Time Stone business is drilled in pretty well in both IW and Engame as it is.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Infinity War? More like Endgame Prologue!

This part 1 and 2 had the same balance as Kill Bill 1&2.... its a good solid example of a duology arc.

This is a good list. Homecoming is less essential than Doctor Strange, though. Homecoming plays very little part in the grand scheme of things. Thor 2 is probably more important in understanding the overall story. or even Iron Man 2 & 3, just for understanding why RDJ was so important to the franchise

reply

I didnt want Homecoming in there, I think its a weak entry, but I left it solely to show the bonding with Stark. Maybe it can still go.

reply

Plus, the Vulture is well done and Keaton is by far the best thing about the movie. And I've not seen Thor 2 but I dont feel Ive missed anything.

RDJ already does SO much in the Avengers, hell he even shows up in Incredible Hulk.

I should throw in JUST the Hulkbuster fight from Age of Ultron too.

reply

I think you need Ultron for the origins of Scarlet Witch and Vision, and for Cap budging Meow Meow and then faking not being able to lift it.

reply

Ultron needs a 22 minute cut. Like a tv episode length without the commercials. Maybe even aim for having good cliffhanger moments and edit in actual commercial breaks, but quick and all parodies/jokes.

This short tv pilot parody I did long ago has a good parody commercial example, Diarrest.

LOL this didn't make it to my post above...

In no particular order

Age of Ultron - sets the stage for Cap wielding Mjolnir, also explains why Vision has the Mind Stone, and why Scarlet Witch can destroy it

The Dark World - Gives context to Thor's trip into the past

The First Avenger - Explains the Red Skull's presence on Vormir

The Avengers - Integral to understanding the return trip to the Battle of New York

Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 - Introduces many characters, lets us know their powers and motivations and relationships

Dr. Strange - Explains how Dr. Strange and the Ancient One know the things they do

The Winter Soldier - Understanding who Robert Redford is, and the layer of deceit that future Cap is aware of, and capitalizes on, when he revisits the Battle of New York

Black Panther - Introduces Wakanda, explains why Cap and Bucky are there, and why they are able to help defend Earth from Thanos

Civil War - Gives context to Stark and Cap's rift

Ant Man and the Wasp - Introduces the Quantum Realm, explains why Scott appears out of thin air in Endgame

Ragnarok - Explains Thor's current situation, leads directly into the opening of Infinity War

Captain Marvel - Introduces Captain Marvel, explains her alien/human split identity and her abilities, and why Fury would summon her

reply

I suppose as long as someone is somewhat familiar with the characters, the BARE minimum would be Avengers, Ragnarok, and Ant Man 2.

reply

Good list, but Civil War isn't really needed. You just wouldn't get the elevator scene.

reply

I listed it due to seeing it referenced in subsequent movies, but I havent seen it so I guess I cant know if I was missing anything. The references may be enough, and seem to be for me. I have seen Cap 1 and 2 fyi.

Thanks for pointing this out, I will remove Civil War.
