Since when does China deliver $330 million opening weekends?
I know it’s the second largest box office on Earth, but it’s still not large as the US box office. It’s shocking.

shareThe India box office has the potential to be even larger.
shareTrue (by population), but I don’t think India will be there anytime soon. China’s government believes in soft power through promoting its culture and values, so it’s government has been footing the cost of theater expansions in the country. They regularly release propaganda films in its theaters because of it. That’s why China will eventually eclipse the US in a few years. I see no such effort from India.
share5 day total I believe, not the weekend
shareWhere u been? It’s reason why we get stoopid franchise and sequel moviez insted of good stuph like deer hunter and godfodder
shareChina Is the 2nd biggest biggest Market for Box office....
Since 2014 China has Absolutely EXPLODED.
Within the next next 2 to 4 years,CHina will over take US for the biggest Market for box office...
as for your question...It Doesnt, NO Film in History(even Chinese films) had put up a 300 M + OW...
In China there is really only 3 Franchise Putting up Massive Numbers similar to this.
The Fast and Furious Franchise
Transformers
and The MCU
All have Produced Multiple films that have Made Over 300 Million Total in China and Had Massive Opening weekend(no where near EGs OW) but a 100 MILLION+ openings in China is huge.
but really None franchise has had the Success the MCU has....Since 2014, The MCU films consistently make over 100 Million totals(which is rare) and the event films have 200 to 300 M+ totals
It basically comes down to Disney and Marvel Studios making China a priority...They have partners with them on several MCU films....They made Securing Release dates for MCU films a priorty in China back when China hadnt even Exploded yet....They Literally Write their MCU films around getting a Chinese release date, China is very Specific, there are many different things that is outlawed and if any of those things take place in the movie, You wont get a Chinese release...They also Cast Chinese Actors in for roles in MCU films to help with box office and securing a release....
You wouldnt believe how many big budget movie dont get release dates at all in China because They are Turned down....
basically Marvel Studios, Knew China was a Priority and that was one of the many things they took into account when they were making their movies ...
also, Now, after Years, Its mainly coming down to quality.....Marvel Studios and The MCU has now Build a Loyal following and fanbase that No other Franchise can match in China....after 22 straight good movies, Like here in the states, Chinese audiences are invested in these films...
Thanks for the answer. I guess maybe that makes sense then that Shang Chi will be a future Marvel film. I know diversity is important to Marvel, but an ethnic Chinese superhero can’t hurt either. I know that there is a fine line between releasing in China as a foreign release vs a co-production/domestic release. I heard that Chinese themed films can bypass the foreign quota and reap a larger percentage of profits when its release as a co-production. I can see Marvel and Disney salivating as we speak. It would pass as pandering if Marvel wasn’t set on diversifying it’s lineup anyway. Smart move.
shareI think it's a big mistake to show these in China. If the day ever comes where we go to war, they're going to know all about our superheroes and their weaknesses, and are probably devising plans right now to neutralize their advantage.
shareWorry not! Captain Marvel doesn't have any weakness.
