Will MCU ever be able to get back to the level of EPICNESS they encountered with Endgame...

The 10+ years of build up and the perfect conclusion with Endgame

As a fan totally invested in the original 4-5 Avengers, now that they have hung up their boots, I find it hard to imagine being as psyched for the upcoming sequels. And now with Endgame giving such a fitting conclusion and tying up all the major open ends, what else is left to do in this franchise that would be fresh and new.

But still ... it is MCU. They know what the audience wants, so I wont be surprised if I am suckered into their world again

They're supposed to do an Eternals movie and with future movies involving Dr Strange, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, and probably Nova, it seems like they're gonna go off-world for the next few phases. We'll probably start seeing some cosmic beings and stuff. Considering they now have Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer, I expect to see Galactus. When they reboot X-Men, we might start seeing the Shi'ar as well.

I think that's epic enough.

reply

As a MCU fan who hasnt read any comic books, I actually loved the earth specific stories more than the cosmic stories that they showed

Cant get too excited about them going off-world and about new cosmic beings, unless something special is delivered [but thats just me]

reply

It's not just you. I, too, not a fan of the Guardian of the Galaxy stuffs. Thor was okay when he was primarily on Earth and has an Earthling girlfriend. But Ragnarok felt too Star Wars-y. No wonder they decided to combine Thor and GotG together.

Silver Surfer is one of the most ridiculous character design I know. He's a surfer dude and he's silver. Like a T-1000. But a surfer dude. But in spaaaace.

I think Silver Surfer is even more nonsensical than Green Lantern. And his weakness is the color yellow!

I would like to see a Fantastic Four movie done right. But silver surfer? Not so much.

reply

I am sorry .. what? His weakness is the color yellow?

How does that even work !! Sounds ridiculous. Will google it at some point

reply

Green Lantern's weakness is yellow (or at least it was).

reply

It was, when the character was first created. It was a nod to the fact that the Golden Age GL had one weakness as well (wood). It's since been retconned SEVERAL times; currently there is no yellow weakness.
GL is one of those characters that annoys me because when you stop and think about it, the stories don't make much sense. . .but could be SO SO epic. Ah well.

that truly is the only disappointing thing about Infinity War and Endgame...

I do not believe in my life time(I'm 32) I'll ever experience anything Like what I and the rest of the world experienced with IW and EG...

I have no doubt, Marvel Studios will produce absolutely Epic Event/Avengers films down the road, I could easily see Kevin Feige doing something similar with a long term play where they work on a 5 to 7 year plan of introducing The Fantastic Four and X-Men and The it ends With a Similar Avengers 2 or 3 film EPIC where The Avengers,X-Men and FF come together to fight some huge threat...

But I got to be honest, as Incredible as that will be, Its not The FIRST....we all already got that, and IMO it cant be done any better.

I just dont think anything can ever top the 11 Year Build Up, The Creation of The Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Debut films of These Characters, The Ride that went along to this Ultimate Pay off

I absolutely have no doubt, whatever Fiege comes up with will be CLOSE I just dont think It will ever be what we experienced With IW and EG and The 11 Year build up...

But a 5 to 7 year Play where X-Men/FF and The Avengers come together in a series of Avengers films to fight a huge threat would be about as close as you can get

reply

Agreed ! the novelty factor is what is going to be missing

If anyone can deliver though, it is MCU - they have managed to keep their slate fresh even despite umpteen origin stories and crossover events

If they dont do something fresh though, and try to follow the same pattern I think it wont bear as much success. DCEU is prime example of that. They thought they could simply put in a bunch of superheroes into a movie and reap the rewards, but it is never that simple. They couldnt even get the GENERAL audience (non-fans) to care about extremely popular characters like Batman and Superman. You need long term vision and the willingness to take calculated risks to get the movie going audience invested to this extent

Well said!

I dont think it will ever get as big as this again.

Phase 4 still looks good with spidey, pnather and strange but it will take a while to get over the loss of the big three and Feige needs to do another great job in casting and picking the next lineup of heroes.

reply

You make a great point about Casting

The casting was perfect in almost all the movies. Guys like Paul Rudd, Cumberbatch, Robert Downey, ScaJo, Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, etc. have an instant likability factor even off screen and are oozing with charisma. Their interviews show that they are fairly grounded people despite being celebs. It helps when the audience can connect to not just the character but the actor as well.

reply

I say they go for a more intimate and scaled down epicness next. Why try to top when there is an opportunity to make the next phase different and unique?

reply

Yeah they should keep it 'small scale' for while and then go big and global threat-like with the likes of fantastic 4 and Xmen.

reply

One thing I love about both Ant Man movies is how they're so much more personal and character driven. Even Ragnarok had that feeling. A Black Widow spy thriller would probably turn out like that too.

reply

I also think the Black widow will be more personal and hope its a bit of a spy flick like winter soldier.

The secret to the MCU was the same secret that Marvel exploited in print form way, way, way back then.

The strength of the MCU was the characters that Marvel created and the relatable humanness of those characters. The start of Marvel's popularity was through a group of characters that weren't even traditional Superheroes. The Fantastic Four were a family and their stories were about adventure and discovery. The X-Men were a family. The Avengers were a family. Sgt Fury and the Howling Commandos were a team but they were also a family.

The writers, editors, inkers, etc were all in this focused work to turn out stories to their "True Believers" as part of one big family who were invested in their "Characters".

My guess is that Marvel will slowly do what they have always done and that is introduce those that are receptive to new Characters, and build the stories around those characters. I garanutee you that Marvel will not rush and do exactly what did not work for Warner/DC and that is ignore the characters, subvert the character and rush towards an "Epic" that has no meaning to fans. Marvel knows that their characters have to earn their connection to the audience.

If Marvel would have had access to their entire catalog in 2008 Iron Man would not have been the character that they would have introduced to kick off their MCU. Marvel would have followed the the same gameplan of characters 1st, crossovers 2nd and big events 3rd. That plan or model was always in their print world.

The Marvel catalog is so large, diverse and rich that the real problem for fans and them is how to limit their scope to just a select few at a time. Netflix started pretty good but just as when Marvel gave licensing to characters to other Studios the results were uneven. Disney+ will change that. Some fans of the MCU may be spoiled with the Infinity Saga as a whole but it was the smaller stories that really brought fans to the table.

I am excited to see the smaller stories take root again and a return to that sense of Discovery and Adventure that was the real heart of Marvel.

Fantastic Four and X-Men when eventually introduced are going to be the big bucks franchises. Obviously it'll be a few years before they introduce those but with those back, Marvel does have a good financial future. And they'll still make money off their newer characters they have recently put in their movie Universe like Spider-Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, and Captain Marvel.
