I think he meant necessary, non-made-up jobs. Not 'Executive Vice President of the Corporate Analytical Processing Sub-Division'.

I'd agree that 'farmer' or anyone who grows and cultivates food, is one of them.

I don't know about 'teacher' though. Some people are home-schooled or self-taught.
