When Marvel goes down the Squirrel Girl path, I'm done with the MCU

If it's true what I read (that Kevin Feige would allow such a ridiculous character to infect the movies), then my following of the MCU will come to a close.

Squirrel Girl is an idiotic character, made more as a lighthearted pun. To treat her like a serious character is mind bending. She uses her powers to "communicate with squirrels" to fight crime. Apparently she's defeated Thanos, which seems like quite a miracle stretch to me and nigh impossible.

Please Kevin, don't go down this road unless you want to permanently damage the MCU.

The MCU is winding down. At this point they could introduce 'Captain Tickles Your Balls' and it wouldn't matter all that much. If they can have a tiny man flying about on an ant, they can pretty much do anything.

reply

Marvel movies are very much done. I'm glad the cycle ended with low levels of convergence. What comes next looks like SJW crap, but who cares? we already have the original cycle. I only miss the black widow movie that never happened.

We already had good movies, now it's time to have laughs. I actually hope they make a movie about Squirrel Girl, as serious and dramatic and feminist as possible. That'd be the best shit to watch with beers and weed.

reply

So you were with them when they introduced a talking raccoon, a sentient tree, and a lascivious waterfowl but you stop at squirrel powers?

reply

A giant dwarf, a Kiwi gladiator made of rocks, and a woman emerging from submolecular space with her hair and makeup perfectly done are all apparently fine, too.

But we must draw the line at squirrels!

reply

... after due reflection, I think I'm going to start shipping Rocket and Squirrel Girl.

reply

Funny your name is Otter, cuz wasn't Rocket in love with an otter in the comics?

reply

I don't know, I've never even seen a GotG comic, much less read one!

reply

Have you seen what she looks like in the comics?!? Also, she in no way could defeat Thanos on her own. Jean Grey could, likely Hela and maybe Rogue could but not Squirrel Girl. Sorry, not buying.

reply

You want a medal or something?

reply

Only if it's from you, since you offered a medal.

reply

I'll have to steal it first. Brb.

reply

LOL

reply

Came here to say this, you beat me to it.

Seriously, if you could buy that crazy scene with Winter Soldier spinning around with him firing away in Infinity War, you've pretty much drunk the Kool Aid.

There was an interview with James Gunn where he discussed being hired to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy. He struggled with how to make Rocket a workable character. He was afraid that a talking raccoon would reduce the movie into a live action Bugs Bunny cartoon. Damn, if he didn't make it believable though.

I like the periodic running joke that people keep confusing Rocket with other animals. Thor refers to him as a 'rabbit' in Ragnarok and, IIRC, somebody in GotG II referred to him as a fox.

Comic Vine:

Squirrel Girl has many squirrel-like powers. She has superhuman strength and agility, allowing her to leap several stories, as well as an enhanced sense of smell. She also has 2-3 inch retractable knuckle spikes that can slice wood, in addition to sharp claws on each digit that can be used for climbing.

reply

And she can fit a lot of nuts in her mouth.

reply

And she can speak chipmunk!!

reply

Squirrel Girl was funny when she would just show up every once in a while and do something randomly awesome, then leave. Marvel has over exposed her. I have similar feelings towards Deadpool as well.

reply

Are you sure you would stop following the MCU because of one character? You'd have to stop watching movie where she's not even in. It's hard to believe you would do that.

reply

My concern is more where they are being prodded and pushed to go, using these less popular characters infused with SJW agendas and pretending they are truly "bad ass" when they are not. Take Miss Marvel for instance. Every comic book lover I know hates that character, yet somehow the media keep referring to her as a "beloved" Marvel heroine. Exactly who loves Kamala Khan? Is it 4 people who live off the New Jersey Turnpike? Seriously! And then Kevin Feige is out there giving interviews, saying she will be in the MCU. I hope it's in a comedic capacity, because her character sucks.

reply

Squirrel Girl is joining the New Warriors parody series on Freeform. I don't believe she is heading for the movies.

reply

If this is so then THANK GOD!

reply

I wish Marvel respected the New Warriors more. It was my favorite team book in the 90’s.

reply

They have been inserting the sillier stuff more and more since Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor Ragnarok was half a comedy itself. So I don't see why you are so concerned here. The have already gotten pretty stupid. They we're even considering putting stupid Deadpool into this universe. Another extremely silly character.

reply

Deadpool is a comedic character to an extent, with his sarcastic banter and sometimes fatalistic recklessness but he's also a true badass. In the comics, Deadpool would kill an enemy without thinking twice and many times had to be restrained from doing so by other super heros. I could go on about how he's a much, much more serious character than Squirrel Girl but I'm sure others will have comments to your post that will argue additional points. Deadpool is many things but "stupid" is not one of them.

reply

YEAH HE IS STUPID. He talks to the audience, talks about the X-Men movies/comics, knows he's in a movie/comic etc. Talks about the actors in the movies or artists in the comics. PURE STUPIDITY. Sorry. Your worries are stupid as well. Especially when we already have dumb characters like Rocket Raccoon and Howard the Duck show up ....πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„

reply

There's nothing stupid about Deadpool talking to the audience or about actors.

reply

Yes it is. He actually talked about different actors playing Xavier. Dumbest character ever.

reply

I already know what he did. Explain why it's stupid though.

reply

Because it's stupid and takes the viewer out of the movie. Breaking the fourth wall can be used to good narrative effect (house of cards) but as a superpower it's just stupid.

reply

If I start imagining an audience is watching me and I start talking to them, I'm not breaking the fourth wall. It's all in my head. That's all Deadpool is doing. As long as the other characters do not see the wall being broken, then it's technically not being broken. It's just Deadpool revealing he's crazy to the other characters he's interacting with as they watch him talk to himself.

James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart both played Professor Xavier in our world, but not in Deadpool's world. So when Deadpool tries to tell other characters that Professor X is either McAvoy or Stewart, they have no idea what he's talking about... Because it's all in Deadpool's head.

It's not a superpower either. It's just a quirk. When he was Wade, he had a big sense of humor and a sharp tongue, but when they forced him to become Deadpool, his sense of humor became twisted along with the rest of his personality, and that's why he talks to himself as if he's talking to an audience.

We are all in Deadpool's imagination.

reply

"Ragnarok" was more like 4/5 a comedy, only the final battle was serious.

Which is why I liked it so much.

reply

Cool story, bro.
