As they explained his backstory, it seemed that he grew up on Titan, and was a figure of some political importance. When overpopulation threatened to end life on Titan, he fought for many years to solve it by a random culling of 50% of the population. He was not able to get his way, and watched as other measures failed, and the planet died. Since then, he's traveled the universe, and each time he finds a sentient race, he kills half of them. He's been doing this for a long time. The clear inference is that he's mad, and singleminded. He was even willing to sacrifice the one person he loves-- his adopted daughter Gamora-- in pursuit of his goal. It stands to reason that once he achieved the power to instantaneously accomplish it, he wouldn't have a sudden change of heart, or rethink his belief system.
