So wait... The Overmind...

So wait... The Overmind basically got the children evolved, so it can consume them spirtually/collectively into itself??

If so, wtf yo....

reply

Not really, the Overmind just knew it was time for humankind to evolve into the higher life form so they sent the Overlords to insure that the Earth made it to the point when that would happen. Once the children evolved they became part of the Overmind which was just a collective of all of the races that had evolved.

Right right! Just like the lion just knew it was time for the lamb to evolve into a higher lifeform...in it's belly.

There's no higher form of life. If bacteria will survive longer than humans do. Who was higher form of life then? Obviously bacteria, because it is still alive and we aren't. IMO the Overmind was just culling competition while also feeding on energy.

reply

Um, maybe that is what the miniseries conveyed (I didn't watch the 3rd part after the idiotic ending to the 2nd part) but the book is very clear on why the Overmind sent the Overlords to Earth, what their mission was and what happened after the children's evolution.

reply

No, this is what reality conveys. All the forms of life are fit. Only the forms of life that are alive when Universe is about to end maybe could be considered "higher". There was no reason to erase "old" humanity because the concept of higher form evolution is flawed. Therefore even mere me is superior to thinking of Overmind, because at least I know this simple concept of reality. ;)

reply

You're choosing to define "higher" as you wish rather than is commonly understood. Higher usually means more complex or more intelligent. It is not the same as fitness, nor does it deal with superiority. When biologists refer to "higher life forms", they mean multi-cellular life as opposed to bacteria or archaea.

It's easy to win an argument by redefining the terms to suit your needs... but, you're intentionally warping the generally accepted term to mean "better fitness" or "more evolved" which is not the meaning at all.

reply

I took the definition from the movie/book (evolved to higher state of being). But that's exactly my point. If it doesn't imply superiority just complexity, then it cannot be used to justify killing adult humans just because their children are more complex (in reality just different species at best). Still doesn't give them better fitness. That can only be determined retroactively.

reply

No one killed the adult humans (at least not in the book), they either committed suicide or just died of old age (except for Jan who died when the final ascension happened and the planet 'dissolved'.)

And of course evolving into a higher state of being implies both complexity and superiority. Just as homo sapien was both superior and more complex than the neanderthal.

reply

Where in the series does it say/show that the adults were killed?

reply

Well I think there was some ambiguity to it and if you hadn't read the book, seeing the shape the earth is in when Milo returns (and the planet's ultimate demise, I can understand seeing it as the adults being killed.

reply

Well even in the series it was made clear that it took 80+ years for Milo to return, that is enough time for every adult to die naturally (or commit suicide), especially if they really have no reason to live anymore.

reply

You also have to remember, the entire 84 years Milo was gone, Jennifer was spinning up on that hilltop. Who knows what that did to the atmosphere? That would have freaked everyone out. Not to mention the nuke going off at New Haven, lots of things could have happened during that time. Combined that with the loss of their children and inability to reproduce, they had lost most hope. Some made it to the orbiter, but things went wrong. Early, as Milo's girl looked fairly young as a corpse still.

Yup. That's what happened in the book.

It's a book. You can read it.

I am not really sure. I think the Overlords say they do not really understand the Overmind. They just do what it tells them to do. The Overmind is a giant moveable structure that moves around on the Overlord's planet. So it may really just be a very advanced alien and not 'god', as we understand this concept today.

If it didn't create the universe 13 billion years ago then it may be 'a god' but it is not 'the God.'

They really don't.

They just do what it tells them to do.

They also watch it.

Right. It'a an alien that goes around absorbing whatever it feels like.
