Most of the major global religions collapsed overnight with the coming of the Overlords.

It's rather hard to maintain a fantasy with reality knocking on your door.

The religious nut, Ricky's illness, Ricky's dead wife, the hotel room, Jennifer being the conduit, Jennifer talking, Karrellen being shot, basically anything melodramatic and cheesy done or said, wasn't in the book, and yet the book was far more enjoyable and interesting.
