How Simon Helberg Researched 1940s Gay Life For “Florence Foster Jenkins”share
The "Big Bang Theory" star modeled his character after one of the 20th century's most notable gay men.

When Simon Helberg was cast as Cosmé McMoon, the closeted piano player who accompanies Meryl Streep’s talentless, opera diva in Florence Foster Jenkins, he knew he could handle tickling the ivories.
After all, the 35-year-old The Big Bang Theory star is a skilled pianist who studied at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
But to capture McMoon, who died at age 79 in 1980, Helberg needed a crash course in prewar gay life. The first thing he did was read a biography of composer Cole Porter.
“Cole was a huge fan of [Florence],” Helberg tells NewNowNext. “He was married [to a woman] and led a different life in many ways. There were so many tragic elements.”

Helberg admits he’s not a Method actor, but says Porter navigated the same waters as McMoon. “Cole Porter also had lovers and was also married. He might have been Cole Porter before he knew. It was not accepted and there were secret bars he would go to.”
Jenkins doesn’t explicitly state McMoon is gay, but it’s inferred [sic] in several scenes.
Helberg describes the era as “a fascinating time,” though one where LGBT people would not have been free to live their lives. Further exploration into McMoon’s private life, he says, “would be a different movie.”
