Meh movie set in Sycophant City....

While the performance were decent and there were laughs, there is nothing redeeming about this movie. After watching the movie, I had questions so I did a little research and it was just as expected.

Basically a rich, spoiled girl/woman used her inherited money to surround herself with sycophants who milked her for money, attention, connections and prestige. She knew what she was doing and was not insane or mentally disabled - there are many quotes by her close "friends" which state this. Shrew that she was, she used those around her to feed her delusions of grandeur and narcissism - please note her ever-present briefcase which we find contains her will that she carries around at ALL times to conveniently "add" people in order to keep them in check.

"Oh, but the poor woman had syphilis and her terrible doctor husband gave it to her." Reality check: The spoiled rich girl at age 15 disregarded her parents and ran off with a doctor (creep) who was 16 years older than her. She contracted syphilis, more than likely from him. They parted and she never divorced from him. In the movie we are supposed to feel sorry for her and how she "struggled" after she left her husband and her father had disowned (temporarily) her - but in reality, her mother Mary helped her during this time...so basically she probably had to make due with one strand of pearls, not three.

"Oh, but she was a great patron of the arts and gave generously." Translation: She used the enormous wealth that she inherited and did not earn to pass time and wield as a weapon so that she could surround herself with sycophants and talented people who would never have given her the time of day otherwise.

So, in conclusion, this movie was just the story of a rich, spoiled, talentless, narcissistic woman who has spawned the next generation of her sycophants from the grave so that they could make a movie glorifying her while lining their own pockets.

Sincerely,
Ima Ontoyou

I agree! (About the movie not having anything redeeming about it)

I found it PAINFUL to watch--and listen to--I didn't find it amusing. Meryl Streep drove me crazy and I couldn't wait for it to end.

Your analysis is the first thing I've read here that rings true.

I'm about thirty minutes into it, sorry I spent the 4.99 to rent it, and think you've summed it up quite well.

Yet you all redeemed yourselves by coming here and enlightening us with your brilliance. What a blessing you all must be to your school teachers.

With respect, it's not too smart on your parts really when you thing about it. I mean it's a film, not a political climate that you're forced one way or another to take part in.

Let me introduce you to a little known thing called happiness. Trust me, you'll be closer to it if your stick to the genres and performers of your liking.
