Why did Thomas help James commit suicide? Did he do it because he wanted the gold for himself? Or did he do it because he wanted to help end James' mental anguish? I thought the ending was a bit ambiguous.

Overall i guess it was because the James he knew was completely gone, replaced with a man full of guilt, a man who would bring nothing good to his family (Mainly Shame/Burden). He basically put him out of his misery.
