I assume they love cleanliness but I didn't get it ? Also the main mom was *beep* weird, like stalker weird.

Remember they said the husband lived in China with his first wife for a while? They leave their shoes outside the doors in China.

The husband used to live in China with his first wife, and got the habit of leaving the shoes outside, but also this is a handy plot device firstly for the tripping over the shoes plus the cat, and also later to help indicate to the upstairs couple when the downstairs couple is home or not, creating a little bit of suspense for the viewer, mostly when they get back from abroad.
