So that he overhears their conversation as they're criticizing the garden. So, right away he dislikes them.

Still, the couple below didn't really need to live in the apartment, considering that they owned their own luxury house.
The plot had a lot of subtle elements in it that weren't articulated clearly, so you had to infer some things about it; i.e. her family's history of mental illness.
