My theory

The movie seems to go from 3rd act to end of movie skipping everything that should come between them... it just says, na we don't need to do them, we'll just cut to the ending, and make it so no one really knows wtf happened, what she throws into the water, why the cops didn't drag the river looking for the baby, I mean none of it really makes any sense in the end.

What I think happened (Spoilers)

Well Theresa and Jon explain they always get what they want, what they wanted was to destroy her...
Momma in the end must have thrown the cat into the river
hence the cat being gone
not the baby
killed herself because she knew she wasnt fit to be a mother
and left Jon and Theresa with Peter
and it was all done to convince Justin so he would leave

In the milk glass ....bottle left outside each morning

I noticed Theresa brought over lemonade, and Jon left the table with the carafe to get water, maybe a red herring, but at first it seemed to me they were trying to slowly poison her and the baby.

I was under the impression she put something in the lemonade to make her breast milk unhealthy for the baby so that it would continue to cry. Similar to the car alarms going off. They were creating as much disturbance in their lives as possible so that she would take her up on the offer to babysit. The baby wasn't getting a wink of sleep because of malnutrition/noise/etc, so the parents weren't getting a wink of sleep trying to make the baby happy.

I believe that is why the nurse told he she should stop breast feeding the baby.

The thing that got me about this movie is how accepting they where to just let the psychos move back in next to them and have alone time with their baby after they had a taste of what their true colors where within a few nights of meeting them. The woman drank nearly a whole bottle of wine while pregnant, and then lied about it while calling her a cu*t. Seriously crazy-o-meter off the scales here.

The husband was completely obvlivious and morononic. What kind of marriage is it to have a foundation built on 0 trust. The husband was skeptical at first then he did a 180 and was like nahhh they totally are 100% normal people, clearly my wife is bat *beep* crazy because of her "family history". He could have at least humored in her a little bit. Yeesh. Just had to get that off my chest, sorry.

I had a problem with those things too... it was unrealistic. It defied suspension of disbelief.

I don't think she threw the milk bottle into the water, that wouldn't make any sense, it's evidence.

I think Theresa drugged the milk, and drowned Kate in the tub, and the cat in the river...

I don't think she was poisoning the baby, I think Teresa was breastfeeding him and that is why the baby got fussy because he got used to her milk. There was one scene where we see Teresa messing with breast pads that are used so you don't leak through your bra. Like in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, she kept her milk up through probably a breast pump. After the baby started bottle feeding was when she started poisoning the milk outside. I also think it was the cat that was thrown in the river.

Ya I get it now... they poison the milk with sleeping pills, mom and cat drink it, they both die and they steal the baby.

By the end i had a feeling that Theresa wasn't even pregnant in the first place.

Theresa was definitely pregnant. In the scene at the pool, Kate is showering with her swim suit on, and Theresa is shown showering naked beside her.

WHAT. Did you even watch the same movie I did? At least til the end? To quote another user from another thread (smokiman), here is what happened -

But it was Theresa disguised as Kate who threw whatever into the river. In the end, it doesn't really matter what she threw in there. It just had to look realistic enough for potential witnesses who would later say that they saw "Kate" near the river. As we later learn, it was really Theresa. Don't you guys get this? ?

Everything was perfectly explained in the end, your theories are wrong.
And Therese and Jon killed Kate when she woke up at her apartment making it look like a suicide.
