So what's the deal with Kate's brother? (spoilers)

The boy in that family photograph Kate kept looking at was probably her deceased brother, right? I didn't pay enough attention at the cemetery scene, that must have been the boy's grave? If I remember correctly, he died in 1999, anyone remember his date of birth? I wonder how he died and if Tessa, Kate's mom, was to blame for his death somehow. Maybe that's where Kate's hatred for her mother comes from. Did I miss something plot-wise? What's your theory?

I was wondering about that mother-daughter relationship. Certainly did not seem loving. Especially when Kate asked Justin if he called the mom to come over.

Did I miss something plot-wise?

I thought the whole family history lesson was unnecessary and had nothing to do with the movie. But I assume it's there so we would understand why Justin would later doubt his wive's validity because of her "mental" background.

I assume he committed suicide and mom was a detached, bad mother to them.
