JK Rowling doesn't give a sh*t about a good story anymore now it's all about the money.

Truth.

Your truth maybe.

I got what I paid for - an exciting visually strong Wizarding World Movie.

Lot's of magic and likable characters. Even Johnnie Depp surprised as Grindelwald - finally - he was not over the top.

The First FB was great. Quaint, lovable characters within a solid, (mostly) tight story. This 2nd one is horrible. It goes back to the Rowling style of scatterbrained plotting and worthless fan-service. Many prominent characters are there for no reason at all. Every woman in the film is crushing on Newt. People do things for zero reason. People DON'T do things when there is plenty reason to take action.

It looks beautiful. Loaded with Potter fan-service so it will probably please that crowd. To me it was a looong, boring movie that was written like a throwaway birthday party puppet show (if puppet shows paused to engage in overt gay innuendo). Gone were the character portrayals that made me love them so much last time.

Actually I'd be interested to see what her original story was vs the screenplay. Order of the Phoenix was a great book but the screenwriter butchered it. Maybe same thing happened here.

reply

She wrote the screenplay.

reply

Guess that's not it then. Sorry.

The movies are very pretty, and I think they have some good ideas stuck in all the plots that never quite come together. I think she's just very inexperienced with writing film scripts. If these movies were in novel form, I'd enjoy them a lot more. Then they could be adapted later on into much better films by someone who knows how to write for films.

reply

So it would seem. She's gone full George Lucas.

reply

I think they are trying too hard to set up a long franchise at the expense of this movie. A little more going on than is needed.

It's not that she can't write, or can't write anything but Harry Potter books. The Cormoran Strike mystery books are really very good, they're intelligent, interesting, involving, solidly written detective stories, and better than most of the stuff in the genre.

You wouldn't think the same person wrote those good books, and this amateurish screenplay.

reply

It's actually very simple. Her talent is fictional novels, not screenplays. Someone else adapted her Harry Potter novels to the screen. When she writes for the screen herself, she's in over her head.
