Mistake to include America

The first series was chilling because it looked so close to home and normal (apart from the odd visits to government labs etc).

I'm no Little Englander but stretching the plot to other countries makes Series 2 look more like any other sci-fi drama. I'm hoping they keep the story UK-based.

reply

When did they include America?

reply

Have they sold the series to the USA?
Suddenly the people are not people they are perfect and good looking and as plastic as the Synths.

reply

The series is a co-production with AMC in the states.

reply

Ah that explains a lot! I am sad - I enjoyed it when they were real people and not unnaturally pretty. With human indistinguishable from Synths. Even untidy Mum is now suddenly a hotshot lawyer with ironed hair and she has had work done. Shame.

reply

It was always a Co-production. Mom was a lawyer before so she needs to look good when representing Niska you know.

reply

so she needs to look good when representing Niska you know.

Of course - but Katherine Parkinson still looks as if she has had work done, which is a real shame. She looked so real in series 1.

reply

She was having family and marital issues. she was living at home being a mom. obviously she wasn't worrying about appearances. she created herself a purpose fighting for Niska thus making her feel better about herself.

A family is a purpose!
Still I get your point - but she's become a plastic corporate looking pretty perfect unlined personality-free zone.
The son has boys bully him at school, Mom has a power suit and a face-lift, how long until it degenerates into just another American cop show with indistinguishable pretty plastic people some of whom are called human, others Synth?
It's very disappointing.

Katherine Parkinson, who plays Laura, had also JUST had a baby prior to filming Season 1. That could explain her more "real" look, but she is also a very attractive woman and to make herself "more presentabe" in Season 2 does not necessarily mean she had had to have work done.

reply

I really hope that she didn't have work done, I would hate to think she had caved in to pressure.

reply

Well it has been sold to America which is why they've added Carrie-Anne Moss. It's still mainly set in England and the reason for including scenes from the States is probably to emphasize the power of American corporations.

You can see once there's a way of making money - in this case getting hold of an advanced synth - they'll do anything - even murder.

The Milo Khoury character is certainly based on Elon Musk.

Does the UK have the equivalent of a Silicon Valley with a few dozen tech billionaires?

reply

Well not really - we used to have Sinclair research who were the first to bring out a pocket calculator in 1971 but they were flattened by Apple alter on.

Where you just asking a question of making a statement - I'm not sure about the tone of your message.

reply

ARM is a tech giant and its HQ is in the UK and this is probably the closest to silicon valley. As usual, the UKcompany has now been bought by foreigners.

reply

Oh I thought the exact same thing...

reply

It has always been a UK production made with American money.

reply

Like the old joke, "what is the capitol of Canada?" Mostly American.
