Two ginger parents give birth to two black-haired kids...

...who looks nothing like them.

I like this show. Really do. But there's no way that two black-haired children cam e from these two gingers. They also don't resemble them any way in terms of face/body features.

Stuff like bugs me in movies and TV.

It happens. My wife and I are both white, but two of our kids are black and look nothing like me.

The IMDb really needs an up-voting option... 

This is a THREADED message board. Please reply to the proper post!

reply

No, it does not, keep that social media garbage out of here.

When you have up-voting and down-voting you end up seeing only what the majority wants you to see. Its just another form of censorship and manipulation. It also encourages us to be lazy and only read what others previously approved for us, I think for myself thank you, and I read everything on the page.

Oh, please. It's all in good, lighthearted fun.

reply

Lol, you should watch "Me, Myself and Irene". It explains that kind of situation and might clarify the "genetics" behind it

Holy *beep* tour post made me really laugh out loud!

Didn't they make that Jim Carrey movie about you? You Me and Irene?

reply

In reality:
1. It happens. Having parents with a certain hair colour doesn't 100% mean that the offspring will share that same colour. You'd have to look into grandparents as well, if one of them was dark haired the gene could have skipped a generation. There definitely is a way for it to happen. Rare but it does happen.
2. Who says that they are both natural gingers? Maybe one of them is naturally dark and has dyed hair.

Yeah, I wish more effort could be put into finding kids/parents that share some kind of resemblance to each other. Some do it and it's really nice to see but it can't always work out that way.
They have to hire the person they feel is right for the role, irrespective of looks. If they didn't they might end up with someone who looks right but can't act, or they may not find anyone suitable at all.

reply

Nope. The gene for red hair is recessive. So it is possible for two dark haired parents to have a red haired child, but two red haired parents cannot have a dark haired child.

reply

OK, tb-sch. Moreover, since the human genome has been mapped, genetics has become much more intricate than the simple Mendelian inheritance pattern that we all learned in grade school.

reply

While that is true for pretty much all sciences, the empirically observed result stays valid in this case. Red hair still is recessive, even though it seems to carried in several genes. There are certain shades of blonde which will be recessive with red hair, so blonde children would be an option. But not black and especially not twice.

reply

I haven't looked into current knowledge about hair color genes, but it's possible they work similarly to eye color genes.

With eye color, in addition to dominant and recessive color genes, there is another gene controlling whether or not an eye color gene is active. This is why two blue-eyed parents can actually have a brown-eyed child, even though common belief is that blue-eyed parents wouldn't have any brown genes to pass on.

reply

Inaccurate.

Blonde is recessive to dark hair.

Red is a case of it's either on or off (it's a couple different set of genes from blonde/black) it's just it only shows itself when combined with blonde as dark hair masks it.

Red can have blonde or ginger and in very limited cases have dark hair depending on what genes they have available in the blonde/brown set (ie if each parent has a few and those are different there's a slight chance the child will pick those up and have far darker hair than either parent....it's pushing the odds but could happen)

reply

My mother and father both have curly black hair and blue eyes, I have stick straight very light reddish brown hair and green eyes. I could be adopted for how much I look like my family, genetics are unique.

reply

It turns out, you are in fact.... adopted.

reply

The redhead gene is recessive, so two dark-haired parents can give birth to a redhead if they both have redhead genes in their DNA. I don't think two gingers will give birth to black haired children though.

reply

People... this has nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with a casting director who obviously didn't care about hair color.

I just watched another episode of this show's first season and (as I already posted once downthread) again thought that Laura Hawkins (the character played by Katherine Parkinson) was not actually supposed to be a redhead.

Parkinson does often have red hair in her personal life (as seen in this red carpet photo: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1817670/mediaviewer/rm2092544256), and the characters she has played have also sometimes had red hair (as Jen did on The IT Crowd: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0487831/mediaviewer/rm2108343040).

But the character of Laura Hawkins on Humans has brown hair, not red--as you can tell in the photographs linked below:

It is odd to me that there is this whole thread about Laura and Joe being "two ginger parents" but nobody seems to be able to tell that Laura is not actually a "ginger"--or to distinguish between a character and the actress who plays her.

reply

I'm sure other members of your family have same eye colour or hair colour as you, Doesn't always come down to the parents does it :-]

reply

No actually, I'm an only child.
As for cousins; blonde, one redhead, a few with black - eyes are blue or brown. Only me with brunette/green.
So I stand by my statement of weird genetics and unpredictability lol

reply

How about any niece or nephews, Aunty/Uncle lol

So where you from, I'm from Kent and it is really sunny here :-]

reply

Hahaha

I'm from Canada, and it's currently an angry sounding thunderstorm outside!

reply

From Canada eh whereabouts I have been there plenty of times to-Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec, + Hamilton.......

Do you know where Kent is?

reply

[deleted]

Oh right cool, One of my fav TV shows Arrow is shot in Canada as you know in Vancouver :-]

What other 2 locations did you live in before, I am of course meaning England 

Ashford is a nice part of Kent, Was last there 6 months ago- Where do they live now and you should come to the England sometime-Have you been before

reply

[deleted]

Yea Arrow is good, Another one of my fav TV shows I watched that finished earlier this year filmed in Canada was Continuum, Oh that is really good what sets did you go to like where they film Star City?

Yea I have also gone to a'lot of places in the U.S,Alabama, New York, Florida, L.A, Washington D.C, Atlanta, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, + New Orleans

OHHHHHH come to England then at some point, When you said it would be grand to get to see the beauty of those countries you mean cities as UK is all one country

How comes your family/relatives don't live in Ashford anymore???

Yes I'm from Kent originally, As a kid my mums side of family like the culture in Canada so we would go there once a year to different parts......

I remember last time I went to the U.S which was 3 + half years ago, A man asked this woman where in U.S she was from she was from Canada and was really annoyed lol

reply

I just started Continuum two weeks ago, no spoilers! haha
Oh I got to see a lot, so much is shot around Vancouver and on the streets. Hatley Castle (Queen Mansion), Lian Yu (the beach and such, not the onset location), the street where Laurel's law firm is, the Industrial/Verdant shoots, the Art Gallery which had a lot of scenes filmed at it, so many places! I need to go visit again, so I can nerd out on The Flash and iZombie locations too :P

Sorry, I didn't make that clear. I meant it would be grand to visit all my ancestral countries, which includes England ^_^ Aside from a wee bit of First Nations, my family is from that area of the world.

They came over here originally for work, however as the kids grew up and got married...haha. So now they're pretty much all here!

Oh wow, that would have been an interesting growing up - getting to travel so much.

Annoyed? Silly woman :P
It took me all the way down till Georgia before anyone noticed my accent and asked about it; I was just amused, not grumpy! We have the darn hard 'r' sound, you can hear us a mile away if you have an ear for accents.

reply

Ah ok will not say anything then haha- There is a'lot of twists and turns :-]

You got to see sooooooo much then of onset locations-Bet that was fun-Everytime I have been to Canada I have always made sure to have a Wendy's or a Smoke's Poutinerie yum yum

We did have a Wendy's in England from the mid 8O's to very early 2OOO's then they all shut :-[

Oh I see where else in your family history did your family come from?

Yea loved going on holidays as a kid and obviously still do, But would also go to countries like France, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Spain, Italy, Japan, Australia,

Yea I know you guys have the hard 'r' lol........Also like the Mountie's

So when do you think you might come to England, Is your passport valid?

reply

[deleted]

Well let me know once you have watched the whole first season, I really like Poutine and always have it when in Canada

The gravy has to be slightly thick not runny like some places do it, OOOOOHH don't tease me that you had a Wendy's- What did you have there?

Last time I had a Wendy's I had a Baconator, Sour Cream and Chive Baked Potato, + Large Choc Frosty :-]

Yea it was sad when they all closed down in the UK, Like I say ran from mid 8O's in 84 to 2OO1 so was there a very very long time

How far do you have to travel to get a Wendy's, What do you mean your a mutt lol

Wow you got a'lot of different ethnic blood in your family, Yea I'm fully British got Irish, Welsh + Scottish blood in me :-]

Oh right so when do you think you will go there then in the next year or so of saving, I have been Norway a few times over the years to Oslo, Bergen, + Stavanger/Sandnes

You have a relative in Sweden whereabouts, I have been to many cities in Sweden since a kid in the 80's on holiday like: Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmo, Uppsala, Västerås, + Örebro,

I have also been to Japan lovely country, When you said .sadly enough, the official RCMP Police Dog training center for all Canada, is near-ish to me ^_^ Is it very noisy then??

My passport is ok for now as got just under 2 years left on it

reply

It is possible and it works in reverse. I once worked with a girl who had a son with red hair, although neither she nor her husband did. But her mom had red hair. I believe it can skip a generation.

reply

Yea but also they both had brown eyes the kids and both parents have blue

reply

It just works in reverse, since the gene for red hair is recessive. The red hair of the parents shows that all four potential genes are those for red hair.

reply

I can't talk for myself as I can see where I get my genetic traits from but my cousins (except for one) has blue eyes and blonde hair but none of their parents have those traits.

The sole cousin of mine who isn't like that, has medium-brown hair and almost black-brown eyes; her mum (my auntie) has almost black hair and hazel eyes, while her dad has dark brown hair and green eyes.

Genetics can be interesting to say the least!

reply

Yea so the other cousins have dark hair and eyes and only one has the Blue Eyes and Blonde Hair- How about your Nan and Grandad? from your mum and dads side as can get that blonde hair and blue eyes from one of them

reply

these two gingers

Are you talking about Laura and Joe? While I agree that Joe has red hair, Laura looked brunette to me (on my screen, at least). I do think of the actress who plays Laura, Katherine Parkinson, as a redhead because of her hairstyle on first show I saw her on, The IT Crowd--but her hair looked much darker to me on Humans.

Katherine Parkinson on The IT Crowd (red hair):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0487831/mediaviewer/rm3334783744

vs. Katherine Parkinson on Humans (brown hair):
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1817670/mediaviewer/rm2884365824

So your premise is flawed--Joe and Laura are not both "gingers."

reply

Judging by all the conflicting posts on this board, it is obvious that genetic inheritance works differently in different parts of the world. It's the only explanation.

reply

It looks to me like the mother's hair is dyed dark red. Her original color could be black or dark brown.
