Strange Thing To Say About A "Horror" Movie ....

But .... what a sweet f%&king movie !!.

It was a creepy twist on mental illness, but ultimately it was about one trouble friend helping another troubled friend. And it didn't end in a nasty, unsatisfying way. The one friend put all of his trust in his ill friend and the joy that Wyatt had at the end (seeing Christian was still himself) made me happy. It was a really satisfying ending for me.

I thought the actors were all really good (including the actress who played Mara. The friendship between Christian and Wyatt was childlike and oddly homoerotic.

Certainly, Mara's initial reaction to Wyatt in the basement was more realistic, but Christian genuinely wanting to help Wyatt, not showing fear of him and playing along with his delusions was touching (and obviously dangerous).
There was enough creepy imagery and disturbing scenes that it didn't bother me at all that the movie wasn't 'horror' horror. And I liked that ultimately the mentally ill Wyatt didn't hurt anyone (his ex girlfriend, Mara, Christian)

Actually, Wyatt was infected and is now a threat to Christian.

I don't think, therefore I am not.

reply

No. You completely misunderstood the movie.

I'm sure he's trolling. It's obvious from the get-go that Wyatt is mentally ill.

I agree with you especially about the ending. I also thought it was a nice change of pace to actually have characters in a "horror" movie that you actually like.

reply

I totally agree. The ending is what made me love the movie. The amount of trust they both put into each other and to then see that trust pay off is incredible and very satisfying. One of my top movies this year.

Uh, didn't he kill Mara? Hence the stolen car?

reply

It's impossible to say it wasn't her car, but also impossible to say it was her car. We never see her driving a car, to the contrary she is actually walking to work (or from work) when Wyatt tries to apologize for the evening before. IMHO that makes it unlikely that it is her car that he has stolen.

I think it's either his ex-fiance's car, or just some random stranger's car that he used to get to NYC from whatever rural of suburban area he lived in?remember the voice saying it was a mistake to come to the city.

reply

If he killed her he probably would have taken her keys. He had to use a scredwdriver to hijack the car, it was shown sticking out of the steering wheel. Also there appears to be a baby blanket in the backseat as well as a work-chart of some sort, when I paused on that frame it shows names of baseball parks and their availability. So I assume it was just a random stolen car.

reply

No. They were at her workplace, if he had killed her it's unlikely he would have even gotten out of the building. The car has nothing to do with her. Note she never drives in the movie.

I agree. Everyone has their own take on mivies and I think it was filled with homoerotic moments...I think there was more than just a frienship there...at least at one point.

reply

Which point? I saw two dudes who were old friends and comfortable around each other. I don't see where any of this was homoerotic, but maybe I'm missing it. Anyone have a specific scene that implies they might be gay?

reply

There were no homoerotic moments, they were childhood friends and that is a strong bond when it lasts into adulthood. This person is projecting.

reply

*high five*

reply

Go look up the word homoerotic.

reply

Familiar with the term. Now go look up the word 'projection.'

reply

There is literally nothing homoerotic about this movie. You're projecting. Might want to take a good long look at yourself.

I think you're letting your imagination get away with you. They're two good-looking guys and I certainly wouldn't have minded some man-on-man action, but I don't see it as anything beyond friendship.

They're two good-looking guys... but I don't see it as anything beyond friendship.

How many men shave the back of their male friends?
How many men sleep on the floor next to another man's bed when there is other household space available?
How many men invite their male friends on a date with them?
How many men like to hug and spend as much time around each other as much as those guys did?
