I think Hollywood lost it's sense of shock and the skill to stun audiences.
shareI agree, '50 shades of grey' (both the book series and movie) is like a soap opera compared to the Dollanganger series in terms of shock value and insane sex. If they think '50 shades of grey' is crazy & intense, they've read/seen nothing yet.
shareI don't really think one series makes another one not worth being made. To be fair more should get their shot. It took years for them to even tackle the next three Dollanganger books.
There's a whole slew of other book examples where the movies did their first one, yet never continued on. There's so much stuff out there yet that hasn't been given it's fair shot yet.
If anything 50 Shades and Dollanganger could help push the barrier deeper and we might actually get to see some more films of books with more "controversial" sexual elements. Since a few years ago in American films, that prospect looked really grim.
