It's Suffolk not Essex ;)

I LOVE this show but why do they keep saying it's North Essex when many of the locations are clearly East Suffolk (Framlingham and Orford, for instance) and, famously, the Mecca Bingo in Lloyds Avenue, Ipswich? :)

Does it matter?.

Something is calling me, I feel the Gravity, of it all. (Wolf's Rain)

reply

I suppose it matters if you're from Suffolk. :)

They can call it what they like - I'll still love it..
in fact I'm having separation anxiety already as tonight's the last episode and I haven't heard it's been renewed for a third series yet.

The landscape and the architecture, particularly the round church tower, mark it out as the Essex/Suffolk border. But it is supposed to be set in 'Danebury', a made up name but very close to Danbury just outside Chelmsford (in daylight I can see Danbury Hill from my living room window).

A little bit of geographical licence, but bear in mind that the series is set in the Suffolky end of Essex and was filmed in the Essexy end of Suffolk.

I write - by the way - as a Crick, from the Suffolk/Essex border country!

In an interview with Mackenzie Crook on the Season 1 DVD he says he thought up the show in Essex where he has property but found it easier to film in Suffolk.

I grew up and went to school in North East Essex, were it is supposed to be set. Although I have not lived there for 30 or so years something didn't quite feel like Essex. The countryside was a little too unspoilt perhaps, and some of the accents were a little too broad. Although estuarine has penetrated far into Essex there is still a North Essex accent which differs slightly from that of South Suffolk and Toby Jones's didn't really match either of them. I am not sure If I could do so now, but there was a time when I could tell the difference between a Colchester and an Ipswich accent even though these towns are less than 20 miles apart. None of this, of course, detracts from the series, which is wonderful.
