But he didn't specify if it would be a full series or a special. He also implies it might not happen soon/this year.
I heard this on a radio interview he did in New Zealand. He was bit vague on if he would do any at first, but later on he said he will definielty do more Detectorists.

shareI really hope so. I know UK shows don't tend to go on as long as American ones but I would miss this show so much if there is no more. Charming describes it perfectly. It's so simple but witty and always leaves you with a warm feeling after each episode. I'm a big fan of Mackenzie as well so that's a bonus.

The Detectorists is such a great show. Quite unique in my experience. Would love to see as much more as they are able to create.
I saw him at a show in Bethnal Green about 3 weeks ago and when asked about it he said he wasn't sure, so it doesn't seem to be definite.
IMO it's entirely up to him; if he thinks the story's run its course then it has.
That's a shame. I feel like the Christmas Special would be a disappointing way to end the series. It would have been better to end it with the series 2 finale which in a way wrapped up most of the storylines.
shareI've not heard anything over what's going on with it either. I'd like more, but himself and Toby Jones are extremely popular actors just now, and that's not including the rest of the cast who are in demand also. Getting them all together so they could work on it might be an issue in itself.
