That was so gruesome, but I think what made the reveal so shocking was Pat's agonizing screams and begging. His voice even gets really high pitched when he says something along the lines of "okay okay take the gun!" It just makes you dying to know what they were doing to his arm and then they show the horrifying result. Amazing. Great acting on Anton's part.
I was thinking the scene wouldn't have worked as it did if he had his hand completely severed. The fact that it was barely intact made it much more visceral and less like a generic horror flick.
Also more realistic. Severing a hand is a lot more dificult than most movies make it out to be. Watch 127 hours that man had to try like crazy to sever his arm and was a lot more realistic.
How much usage of the arm could he get back with the best medical care. Surgery and physical therapy? I read on a different thread that he could not play musical instruments again as that takes a lot of coordination and dexterity but could he do regular life things with the hand?
Also, would he be able to sue the Neo Nazi group for his medical bills?
I'm no medical expert but I'm guessing if his tendons aren't effected too bad he should be able to recover pretty well with therapy. Even if his arm doesn't heal completely at least he won't be able to cause more trouble for himself by playing nazi punks *beep* off.
Yup. I could think of nothing BUT 'how the hell are they gonna rip that off?' I mean ripping, cutting, whatever - I can only imagine that it's gonna suck and make it far worse.
Having said that, I totally get why they wrapped it - it was a necessity in the moment...
What's going on? What's all this shouting? We'll have no trouble here...
I don't even want to pull tape off of my arm without wounds let alone cut to ribbons, hopefully the blood would wear the adhesive to where it wouldn't be as bad.
When I saw the movie a few weeks back, it was followed by a Q & A with the director and Anton Yelchin. They specifically talked about the duct tape, but more about what it did to the ACTOR'S arm, rather than the character with the injured arm. Basically, they said that Anton toughed it out each day when they applied it and removed it, but they made some kind of special sleeve to keep it from adhering directly to his arm. So, he's like you - even without the wounds, he didn't want that torn directly off...

How badly injured was his arm? At first it looked like it was partially severed and flapping, but when the duct taped it later it looked like a really deep cut. Either way, it was horrifying.
EDIT: Ooph. Nevermind. Found a pic online. It's cut nearly halfway through.
I haven't seen it yet, so not exactly sure of the extent of the injury. But if it was a nearly severed arm, ER trauma would attempt to remove as much of the tape as possible. They would take care of the rest up in the OR. Since we have things we want to stick, say Endotracheal tubes(Breathing tubes for people of life support)that we need to make sure we don't lose, we have sticky stuff. Naturally, when we want sticky things to come off, we have anti stick stuff to do that.
It would more than likely be a surgeon with assistance slowly pealing it off, with anti stick. I imagin it would be a long process. Peel alittle, rub some stick, peel alittle rub some stick untill they had enough of it off to evaluate the wound.
Yeah, but duct tape is FAR stickier than the tape usually used for medical procedures. And, it was wrapped quite tightly, many times over, and directly into the wounds...

I understand, I should of been more clear. We use a substance that when applied to skin, you won't be able to peel it off without taking skin off, unless you use the other substance I was talking about. The sticky substance we use, is applied to the skin, and then we apply our tape on top of that so it goes no where. I can't remember the name of the stuff that we use to peel it, but it works. I would think they would use something similar in the OR.
Ah, gotcha. I actually wasn't aware that such a substance exists. That definitely makes it less of an issue then. I wonder, though, can that substance safely get into a wound without making it worse? Because, I should point out, there is no bandaging happening in this scene - the tape is applied DIRECTLY to him, so that substance would definitely have to seep into the wound when used...

It would be some kind of solvent to dissolve the glue on the tape. Something like alcohol or petrol or acetate or mineral spirits or something. Not good for the wound but at least you start disinfecting lol.
