question about the dogs (spoilers)

An honest question, since I really have no idea: is it really possible for a dog to so quickly overcome and kill (rip the throat out of) a previously unharmed person?

It just seems quite implausible to me. Can't you just get your arms up and fend off the initial (running and jumping) attack and then start bashing the dog in the face or something, or stick a thumb in its eyes? Or, for that matter, with a smaller dog as shown in the film, grab the thing and throw it to the ground?

I'm not saying it would be easy, I'm just questioning the rapidity of the dogs taking down and killing two of the characters...

Yes.

I have not personally seen a dog rip out someone's throat so quickly in real life, but I have seen dogs (and other animals) inflict severe damage very rapidly. The size of the dog or other animal also doesn't matter so much (unless it's a toy poodle or something). I have personally seen someone mauled by a monkey and it happened lightning fast. The person weighed in the neighborhood of 150 pounds and the monkey was only about 20 pounds. The person was maimed horribly (and permanently), though not killed. Pit bulls have a lot of power and muscle mass, even though they are not the largest of all dogs.

It's not the dog in the fight, it's the fight in the dog.

Yes they can and the dog in all likelyhood weighed in the same ballpark as the man. He was a scrawny man and pitbulls may not be as bulky bernards but compact alot of muscle and weight into their frame. That dog could have been as little as 60 pounds or as much as 150 within its same frame so its hard to say.
While there are ways to defend yourself from a canine attack, if one gets the jump on you and you dont have time to think and just have to react your probably going to have a bad time. A very accurate depiction.

Very real, trained attack dogs can be deadly as hell.

And you can find videos online of police dogs being trained to take down suspects (non-lethally), pretty impressive how effective they can be, extremely fast and agile.

There is a good reason for carrying a decent knife if one of your neighbours has an obvious trophy dog. Dog lasts about 10 seconds when gutted.

It has happened here in Montreal just a few weeks ago. A pitbull killed a woman like that.

Attack dogs will beat humans 1 on 1 anytime IMHO. That's why cops shoot agressive dogs on sight. Once they get hold of your leg or arm, they will tore it apart and you won't be able to get them off. After forcing you to the ground, they'll go for your throat.

That wasn't a pitbull that attacked that woman.

I'd imagine the guy was so shocked and the dog coming at him so fast he didn't even get a chance to defend himself. That dog went straight for the jugular.

Trained attack dogs are extremely fast. Even if you're prepared for the attack it can be difficult to defend against. See the video link for examples of real attack dogs in action (not real attacks, only training attacks) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1R_UL4tUB4
