Arm Mutilation Scene Is Hard to Watch But Still Amazing (Spoilers)

I'm a movie gore enthusiast but even after seeing this movie several times, I can never watch the part where Anton Yelchin gets his arm mutilated, without wincing away a little. The way the whole scene plays out is brilliant: Anton getting pulled from the other side of the door and him screaming in pain and agony. Him finally being pulled away and seeing what happened to his arm. The actual look of his arm had me go "oh *beep*" out loud in the theatre. I love slasher movies just as much as the next guy but never have I ever been frightened of bladed weapons than in this film. Not knowing who was on the other side of the door or what weapons they had (assume machete, knives, etc) and seeing the result of Anton's misstep perfectly set up the danger the characters found themselves in.

What do you guys think of this scene? Was it hard to watch for anyone else?

This is exactly what I talked about in my review. I've seen the most outrageous extreme acts of violence in movies but the execution and extremely convincing acting from Anton really made the scene hard to watch (an absolute rarity for me). The whole scene around that first act of violence was on another level with the arm slicing, the arm breaking, and the stomach slicing, it just made me actually afraid to see what was next. Hell of a way to set the tone.

I have seen that movie and know what scene you're talking about. Yes its very gruesome but having already sat through the entire movie where we see people get blown up instantaneously, its not necessarily a 'hard' scene to watch. It feels common place especially for a war movie.

Exactly...after 10 minutes of artillery fire, it's kind of expected

I completely agree! It was hard to watch the 1st time around but I rewind ed it back and watched the mutilation again and absolutely love the execution of the scene. Totally gritty feel to it to go along with the overall tone of the film. This was well made and I hope the director continues with this tone in his future endeavors

What made it so effective for me wasn't JUST the gruesome visuals. I just figured they were merely battling for the gun outside the door. I figured his screaming was more out of fear of the situation then out of pain. And then he starts to bring his arm in and the screaming continues and you see some cuts and at first i'm thinking, "damn they cut him a bit to get the gun, no wonder" and then you see the extent of the damage. Def a holy *beep* moment.

The way everything played out so quickly, i mean that soon into *beep* popping off and we already have a main character maimed, it def set the stage for a movie where anything could happen to anybody.

the wound was bad... But what got me is even though his hand is just hanging on by a thread, his friend still ductapes it all together. I mean we literally saw his hand fall off. Plus, I got the feeling he was starting to lose it (Antons character that is). It almost looks like he's in shock after getting ductaped, and he starts telling his paintball story.

I saw it after the news of his death and it immediatly filled my head with images of him crushed by his car in real life..made it so much harder to watch...so sad. He was very talented. Gone way too early. :(

Yeah, that was probably the most gruesome scene in the movie imo.
