How can you hate a movie...

that you haven't even seen? Maybe it will suck, maybe it won't. You can't really judge a movie by the trailer. Sometimes the trailers are bad but the movie is good, and vice versa.

If it's just because the movie is religious, you shouldn't automatically be closed minded. Give it a try before writing a review or opinion of it.

This is the next stop on the IMDB atheist club schedule. It will only get worse after March 19. LOL 

I was reading a review of the Pureflix Revelation Road series, and the guy actually did a pretty good job although one of the writers of the films piped in and said that he doesn't think there are going to be any more of them which is a disappointment on the one hand but on the other hand he said that Pure Flix is is moving towards more theatrical releases rather than straight to DVD.

I hope that Pure Flix does one more Revelation Road so that they can wrap up the movie series because it's very good. In any event, the guy who was reviewing the series made an excellent point. We hear and see all the time in mainstream Hollywood movies which criticize Christianity. And we're conditioned to go oh that's okay. And if there is mention of Jesus we are conditioned to say "oh that's too preachy or religious films are stupid and low budget and suck."

However, we're constantly getting esoteric and occult & Buddhist Hindu Islamic and all kinds of other religious crap and movies and we're just told to eat it up and accept it. But when we have Christian movies even Christians are sort of made to feel guilty because they're enjoying the spiritual journey of a good Christian film. God's Not Dead, which was an outstanding blockbuster hit because it was made for 2 million dollars and made over 60 million dollars in the theaters, which is an amazing profit according to Hollywood standards or anyone's standards, show that people are ready for spiritual Christian films in mainstream America and in the world.

So, the atheists love to come over here and criticize. But that's okay, because it's all good conversation as far as I'm concerned.

It's ironic though because Hollywood demands tolerance for atheism, Buddhism, Hindu Faith, Islam, pagan and esoteric cult belief systems, but gets ticked off when Christianity and Jesus is glorified on film...

I`m an atheist and I`m planning to watch this movie. And I mean truly watch it, as opposed to what [ shamefully ] some atheists and anti-theists do ... wait for a movie to pop in the theaters just so they can rate it a 1 here on IMDb without even watching it.

Sadly, those like me who aren`t going to a movie with their mind already set to hate it just because its target audience isn`t a group I`m part of or a label I identify myself with, aren`t as vocal about this kind of stuff and the world gets to see only the bad apples, thinking we`re all the same.

I watched a lot of religiously themed movies [ not only Christian ones, although those are the bulk of the list ], most notable recent one being Noah, to which I went in fully aware of the fact that it could be a propaganda type of movie, having all those well known actors in it to reel in a wider audience and it actually wasn`t half bad.
Sure, it wasn`t the best movie of the year or even close to that [ that`s also a matter of opinion I guess -- some actually liked it a lot ], but it wasn`t offensive and it didn`t try to demonize atheists or shove religious propaganda down their audience`s collective throat ... it was a pretty original take on an epic story, regardless of the validity of said story.
That`s why it got a pretty good rating from me, even though it wasn`t a particular great movie for me to go about recommending it to friends and family ...

However, that`s not the case with *some* religiously themed movies and although I don`t approve of the whole tag & wait for it to launch and rate it a 1 without watching it type of approach some ppl prefer to take, you need to reconcile with the fact that *some* religious movies are pretty damn bad or outright offensive [ not only to me or atheists, but to anyone`s intelligence ], their only achievement being that they managed to waste everyone`s time and those movies deserve the rating they got, regardless of the method said rating was given.

reply

I'm an atheist and an anti-theist but I certainly am not gonna rate this a 1 just cause of that, and neither am I gonna bash this this film just cause of that. Has it occurred to anyone that people may rate films like this 1 because they actually do suck and not because of what they don't believe. There are many films on here that get rated 1 by some people for no other reason than they suck or the person who was rating the movie genuinely believe the movie was really that bad.

Quite frankly we've got better things to do. I'll leave the film bashing to the religious who get offended as soon as a film goes against their moral systems.

reply

Hi! I'm an atheist and I don't really plan on watching this film, but neither do I plan on rating it a 1 or bashing it without knowing much about it. I agree with muijistu. I haven't formed an opinion on this movie based on the little footage that I have seen. However, that doesn't mean I can't think there might be some problems with the film. One of those problems, for example, is generalizing. In God's Not Dead, the atheist professor is a bitter, unhappy man. A lot of people (especially young, impressionable people) will get the idea that this is what every atheist looks. In this film it seems to be Sean Astin's character.

I created a thread on this board where I ask respectfully for some honest opinions. Unfortunately, there have not been any responses so far. The thread doesn't really have anything to do with atheism or Christianity, and one does not have to be an atheist to share my views. I'd be happy to hear anybody's opinion.

It's ironic though because Hollywood demands tolerance for atheism, Buddhism, Hindu Faith, Islam, pagan and esoteric cult belief systems, but gets ticked off when Christianity and Jesus is glorified on film...

I don't think it's quite like that. Like you've noted, Christian movies have grown tremendously in popularity. As far as I can see, Christianity is clearly favoured in the USA and Hollywood, compared to other religions and groups, and this part of your post sounds a lot like you think Christians are being oppressed, although I haven't seen or read anything about Christians getting criticized for criticizing films that promote Islam or Hinduism. I don't even know anything about such films being made. If you have an example, I'd be grateful if you could share it.
Free speech is for everybody, and I think everybody should be able to criticize any religion.

Right. Or it's a result of the fundies of the world sinking their fangs in as tightly as they can before they're forced to let go and progress along with people that actually think.

I'm an Atheist, too, and have watched more religious faith-based films than I care to mention. I do not bad mouth or rate a film until I actually see it. Some of the faith-based films are actually good without being preachy. Being an Atheist, I look at them more like fantasy films than religious films and enjoy them for that aspect. Ever see director Daniel Myrick's BELIEVERS (2007)? Now there was a religious film that delivered and in a mature, non-preachy way (and with one hell of a finale). Don't label all Atheists as being uncooperative towards religious films. We aren't. We put our pants one leg at a time just like religious people do. And I have read the Bible several times. It's a fascinating allegory about life, but some people use it as a crutch. That goes the same for some faith-based films, too. But that's the life you lead and that's not my style. Not saying you are wrong to believe. If it brings you comfort, good for you. I am just as comfortable being a non-believer. It has worked for me my entire life.

To Kurtbrian14, I agree, I believe these movies about Jesus are for Christians because they are encouraging (something we all need) and uplifting. Most people know of God but don't know His ways. I have been saved since 1990 but backslide in 1994 after my unsaved husband did me wrong. In 2003, I came back to God and haven't looked back. What are some of your favorite Christian movies?

Here's my list of favorites:

1) No Greater Love (Wife leaves husband because he's working all the time. Years later, the husband sees her but she is saved. The son reunites with the mother).
2) The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry (starring Gavin MacLeod and Robert Guillaume)
3) Brother White (starring Jackée, Bruce Davidson, Ray Wise)
4) Marriage Retreat (starring Jeff Fahey)
5) Time Changer (Gavin MacLeod, Paul Rodriguez, Hal Linden, Jennifer O'Neill)
6) The Moment After (David A.R. White, Kevin Downes)
7) The Moment After II (David A.R. White, Kevin Downes)
8) The Climb (Billy Graham Studios movie)
9) Preacher's Kid (Plot: "Tired of being a Preacher's daughter...)
10) Second Glance (about a boy, who wished he wasn't a Christian anymore - God grants him his wish)
11) Facing the Giants (about a high school team taking on a football team that in comparison: look like giants)
12) Courageous (Alex Kendrick, Kevin Downes)
13) Mom's Night Out (Alex Kendrick, Sean Astin)
14) Fireproof (one girl from my son's high school class; saw this movie 10 times
15) Faith like Potatoes (South African farmer Angus Buchan (Frank Rautenbach) and his family travel south to start a better life.
16) Heaven Is for Real (Greg Kinnear)
17) Letters to God (A troubled mailman (Jeffrey S.S. Johnson) meets a family)
18) Flywheel (surprisingly huge response from Christians all over)
19) What if (starring Kevin Sorbo)
20) Grace Card (Louis Gossett Jr.) - very good

We have seen a whole lot of Christian movies that we all enjoyed very much.

That's kind of brilliant, LenaFoster.

reply

Thanks.  I thought the guy that thought of the idea was brilliant too. LOL 

I get why some people say these films are too preachy. BUT... I work in juvenile dependency... if you know what that is....the state goes in and takes kids away from parents for various reasons... they are in jail, on drugs, homeless, abusive, negligent, no ability to care for the kids...And before I started doing this, I thought there was only one side to the story, ie, the parents were bad. But, now I see differently. A lot of these parents were themselves born into poverty, homes where parents were abusive, drug dealers, absent and in prison, mothers as prostitutes, and they started their lives in the hole, with NO moral framework. Then, once they become parents, feel that love, that doesn't mean they have the skills or framework to succeed. So they get into the system... eager to get help (doesn't mean they will succeed because a lot of times they lack that important foundation sadly)...but sometimes... they reach out...And for the first time ever....reach for things like Jail church...or the Bible, etc...

Sometimes, they say, "no one ever told" them... they had no experience with that kind of life or way of thinking until they are stuck behind bars with time looking for answers," etc.

But, that leads me to over the top Christian movies. Pure Flix doesn't want to be subtle. It wants to be POWERFUL and ON THE NOSE with the message. Not everyone is cynical and critical of Christianity.... there are those people at rock.bottom out there desperate for a way out of their depression or their spiral downward or their bad crowd and bad choices and broken life....

So, it's NOT just preaching to the choir....what is happening with this movie...Pure Flix probably wants to take that one chance and pour it on with the goal of reeling in those lost souls who are searching for hope. This movie is corny to some but HOPE, LOVE, MIRACLE and POSITIVE message infused to others. It's intended to show folks that there's other options out there, as cheesy as that may seem to the "too cool for school" kids...

There are a lot of silently suffering folks out there. I think.THAT is the target audience.... And it is sooooooooo sad that people make fun and ridicule them when they get a renewed sense of life by becoming believers in Jesus And God. And boy have I seen this...former gang members picking up a Bible while incarcerated and moving on...it's hard...or a mother realizing that following her drug dealer boyfriend just got her a jail sentence and separated from her kid and when she tells him she's born again after reading the Bible in jail he ridicules her...And she's got to choose him or her new life...

And as far as being too preachy, the irony is that there's this weird obsession with the occult in Hollywood. Especially the eye of Horus... It's bizarre...I posted the eye of horus YouTube clips which show all the movies which have the all seeing eye in Hollywood movies. But, I also saw this interesting documentary about the Occult in the fashion industry. We (as a society) get embarrassed to deal with Jesus in movies yet, satanic symbols and other esoteric and occult symbols are CONSTANTLY bombarding us and our children.

http://youtu.be/sypXgV0OTxs. The Fashion Industry and The Occult....
So, what is worse?....In your face "preaching" or constant "subliminal" luciferian messages? That documentary is long but it is eye opening (excuse the pun) LOL . Once I started watching for the symbolism, I'm now able to catch it in movies. And I'm like, why???? Why do they do it? What's the point? It's bizarre... Not everything people will agree with, but it does make you ask why there is so much one eye symbolism for instance.

And here is a one eye symbolism in movies clip....much shorter... bizarre though...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YA46dImr77c

Eye of Horus 4/6...

We don't go "oh too preachy"... because it's subliminal occult messaging...eh?

Sorry to go on and on...

Well they're wrong considering Pure Flix has another couple or so faith based movies coming to theaters, there was even a trailer for one before "Do You Believe". So yes, thankfully, there will be more of them.

reply

Yes. Honestly, I've never seen a PURE FLIX film I haven't loved. Not because I'm a fan. I'm no one's fan. I don't worship people or movies, etc. But, because they are really good storytellers. They don't have plot holes. They adhere to the Joseph Campbell Hero of a Thousand Faces monomyth formula and textbook arc format which allows the viewer to focus on the story and not all that indie film "it's all about me the director" nonsense. And you learn lessons about God and faith.

My favorites are the Revelation Road series. The best! Then The Encounter Paradise Lost 2 then The Encounter 1. But Escape was excellent, as was Hollow, the one on the boat where he keeps reliving the same day over and over (I have it in my collection, can't remember the name now...It's 5 am...etc)....you can find them at the Christian bookstore.

You may know that. That's fyi in general for everyone.... I want to see Woodlawn by Pure Flix, the War veteran film by Pure Flix and the film.Max not by Pure Flix about the war dog who loses his buddy and has predicted...all great previews before the film...

I'm not in the least bit annoyed when Christianity and Jesus is glorified on film. After all, the fantasy/sci-fi genre should be open to all kinds of stories. I just get annoyed at peoples inability to recognise the fact that films like "Do You Believe" are promoting backward, superstitious claptrap based on the myths and legends of a group of late-Bronze Age middle-eastern desert shepherds.

reply

Why would you be annoyed? It's THEIR relationship with God. Not yours. We are all given ONE soul to control during our limited time on Earth. It's odd how many people think they are entitled to THEIR soul and other people's souls as well. I could see you disagreeing. Or even trying to persuade. But to actually get annoyed at another souls inability to adhere to your will? Ultra controlling. The problem seems to lie with you.

But you are FREE to be annoyed as you please. . They owe you nothing sweet pea...

You miss the point entirely. (Not surprising perhaps, given your adherence to superstitious religion). I just find it annoying when people abuse their intellect by cravenly clinging to a world-view that has no basis in reality, and is so obviously the product of primitive, ignorant, tribal myths.

reply

No. I think you miss MY point. My point is what happens in the inner caverns of their souls between themselves and God is none of your business. Yet, you are such a controlling individual that what goes on in the inner sanctuaries of OTHER people's souls seems to annoy you. When you are spending energy annoyed at them not being you, they are busy being them and not worrying about YOU.

I don't think my comments require religion. Perhaps years dealing in domestic disputes (representing both men and women, religious and nonreligious) where folks seem to not get that control of another person's soul is impossible regardless of how irritating that may be to the would be controller...just my personal observation in general.... of the dynamic of control...

Yes, and no. If they're not hurting anyone, then it mostly is their business. The biggest problem is that their religious views inform their entire worldview, so it affects others. Especially since Christianity has dominated out culture for so long.

I'm not even sure what you're talking about now. Christianity has dominated our society for centuries. It still does today, which is why people outside the religion speak out about it so much. They're a lot less vocal about Buddhism and other religions because they're not affecting their daily lives.

Well, I'm glad you recognize that you weren't making sense.

Ignore the good, and instead of blaming the bad on the evil of individual men, blame religion.

Or maybe you don't realize you're not making sense. Nothing I said implies this at all. What I said was that Christianity has dominated out society for centuries. I didn't mention anything about whether the religion was good or bad. The point is that it's not simply a matter of leaving someone alone with their religious beliefs. Those religious beliefs have been imposed on the entire society for a long time, so it's not just something personal between an individual and their god. Maybe try responding to what I'm actually saying, if you're going to respond at all.

I won't "hate" any movie I haven't seen, but I certainly will ignore and completely dismiss a movie like "Do You Believe." Within the parameters of discussions about movies, is that "hate"?

The "don't judge it before you see it" sentiment is cute, but completely impractical. We all know what we tend to like and dislike, and choose our movies accordingly.

I ignore Friedberg & Seltzer movies and Nicholas Sparks adaptations for much the same reason . . they have a brand that is so unappealing on its surface that it's hard to imagine the reality of the viewing experience will be worthwhile.

But you're talking to people to get their jollies picking fights with Christians. Just ignore them and they'll have zero effect on you. Once they get a rise, they keep prodding. It's always the same boring back-and-forth, going nowhere.
