I thought we were referring to Elijah Wood's character. I don't see Dirk as either a hero or the protagonist. He is essentially a plot device. Hilarious but not the hero.

Still, I've come to the conclusion that if "Everything in the universe is interconnected, and I'm forced to be the one person to solve a situation in which I can't escape, and I WILL end up solving it by whatever random coincidence happens," only then will I realize that I'm a main character in a work of fiction.
