The Series Is Not Connected to the Dirk Gently Books. And That's Okay.

So, the new Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency series has absolutely NOTHING to do with the two Dirk Gently novels, or anything else by Douglas Adams other than 1 ) The guy's name is Dirk Gently, 2 ) he's holistic, and 3 ) he's British.

But, it's one of the most interesting shows I've ever seen, EVER.

They're only up to 3 episodes, so it'll be really easy to catch up if what I'm about to tell you interests you.

There are two main groups of two. Dirk Gently and his "assistant" who are off trying to solve a series of weird crimes that are connected. And, then there's a holistic assassin and her "assistant", who is the only person she has ever met in her life who she hasn't killed. Yet.

This woman is absolutely immune to harm. If you fire a gun at her, it will miss. If you put the gun up against her head, it won't fire. She kills a group of bad guys, and then runs out of bullets before she gets the leader. The leader pulls a knife, and throws it at her. It hits her shoulder, handle first. She picks the knife up, and buries it in his chest. Plain and simple.

And she's trying to find Dirk Gently.

I for one do not think his character is that far off.
What do you think it lacks?

It is established in ep.1 that this is taking place after the two novels. It is not supposed to be 'connected sequel' to the second novel though - and neither was the second novel a connected sequel to the first novel.

This show recognizes both novels and then builds another unconnected story. And a very DGHDA'esque story that is - a man killed by a shark in a hotel room, quirky otherworldly beings, people turned into animals, Dirk hired by someone who knew he was going to die, stories running parallel etc.

Of course, on one can write (especially dialogue-wise) like Adams. Except perhaps Terry Pratchett. That we just have to accept - he was one of a kind. I do think, however, that the writers does a fair job of reflecting Adams' style.

I would perhaps have gone with a darker, more film noir-like Dirk persona, but besides that, I am perfectly happy with his portrayal.

It's really a shame these two great authors are dead, and way too early in both cases. 😞

I read the books, but it was so long ago I really don't recall much. But regardless, I LOVE this show! Can't wait for Season 2 in 2017!
