Dirk Gently 2012-2014 vs This Series

Just want to know everyone's opinion of which show they liked more? The 2012 one has 2 of my favorite British Comedians and seems to be written more to Douglas Adams. I just bought this entire season in Amazon so I will be watching all of it, but the first episode has been nothing what I expected.

So far the version from a few years ago is by far my favorite of the two

Wow. I didn't even know there was an earlier version. I'll have to check it out!

The British version is better in every single way.

the 2012 show was as good as it can get. It was perfectly in canon, even though the actual storylines were just inspired by the books and even though mangan nailed rather the feel and spirit of dirk than his looks. furthermore all of the other characters were spot on. it also featured the perfect susan. she was 100% accurate to the books. of course it had none of the unfilmable and mighty expensive stuff, but yeah, it was as close as possible with a limited budget.

as for the 2014 series, it basically has nothing to do with the source material, expcept for the concept of hollistic detective work. None of the original characters exist in this, including dirk. the main guy (i don't dare to say protagonist) or his partner or anybody else has the feel, the look or anything else remotely in common with anything in the book.

now, it's up to the viewer to decide if that's bothersome, but it has nothing to do with adams work. like it, if you want, but those people claiming, that it had an adams feel to it, or even superior are out of their minds.

i wanted to like it and i tried every possible angle: reboot, inspired by and even as a stand alone entitiy in an universe, where the source material does not exist. it's not for me. all i wanted to see, was the assistant bash dirk's head against anything blunt, until his brains spill out.

a fitting comparison would be sherlock (BBC) vs elementary. funny enough it seems to have a similar fanbase, that would chose the latter, which i at least was able to somehow bare until s02e01, over the first. with the same "arguments".

it would have been more honest, to just call it "the hollistic whacky private dick" and let's be honest, "based on the books by douglas adams" is a straight up lie. more honest would be "including a concept somewhat similar to one used in the dirk gently books by douglas adams".

the sad part is, that the BBC cancelled the 2012 show in it's prime, even though the ratings were good, the show had an enormous fanbase and it won awards, because of some bogus changes in their budget concept and THIS get a second season.

I like this version, but I do not like elementary or the BBC Sherlock. Elementary is just a simple detective series that does not stck out muchto me, the bbc one has some good actors but the plot is weak at times and they do some bad choices with charactets (like the one lady of holmes). The only Holmes is Jeremy Brett...all the rest are nothing.

The earlier was better yet I can't then away from the new one. The 2012 series focused more on Dirk than his sidekick. But that sidekick reacted perfectly to Dirk's way of thinking.

the Brit version was better.

But then the Brit one was actually trying to be Dirk Gently, and had all his background to draw from (Cambridge etc.I willadmit Mangan wasn't perfect but the background was all there to draw on which made it feel authentic.

This isn't him, but it works if you imagine hes just an insane fan of Dirk Gently books.
