would you recommend this to someone who hasn't read the book but...
holds Hitchhiker's Guide as nearly sacrosanct?
i'm also a fan of more of Landis' work than i've disliked.
imo

I read the Dirk Gently books, but it's been a while, and I really don't remember much of them. Having said that, my response is an enthusiastic Yes, because it's an excellent series, and very funny! I give it an 8.4/10.
PS Loved you in the Terminator series!
Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.
i would not. i gave this a chance from every angle possible: related to the books, remotely related to the books, just somewhat inspired by adams work and utterly unrelated even though it does share the name, could find much about it, except elijah's acting.
sharePicky, picky, picky, there.
Don't listen to him, Sarah! He's just one of the mindless drones. This is a GREAT show!
I can't wait for Season Two in 2017!!

Yes I would. My friends are like that, out of all of them I'm the only one that read the Dirk Gently books. They still love the show. I think even more so since I was at first a bit bothered by how different the character of Dirk Gently was from the books but I got used to it.
shareI think it's quite watchable. However I have never been prone to letting myself get too deep into other people's physical image of a certain character as that is always a disappointment. The storytelling is entertaining as it is.
shareI haven't read the books, but I really enjoyed this show. It had exactly the kind of humour I like, it wasn't boring, the acting was ok, I really liked the weird characters. It was a bit over the top and convoluted at times, but I didn't mind.
As far as i understand it doesn't have much in common with the books and I have seen complaints on this board from people who have read them so I think you might enjoy it more if you haven't read the books!
Give it a go, maybe watch the first episode and if you don't dislike it then watch more. I was hooked after the first ep and found that it kept improving. I'd say it's kind of a weird show with weird humour and unusual characters, so if you don't usually like that kind of stuff then you probably won't like this either.

if you love douglas adams for hitchikers, i think you'll love this regardless of having read the books. i know i did.

books, records, films - these things matter.
its a good show in its own right, with some cool performances and acting but its nothing to do with the DG books, aside from the bizarre events and sharing a few name characters.
Its more of another Matt Smith clone tv show, which might limit its run length (since Smith got very annoying to watch after a few episodes of his antics). I never once imagined the original DG as a Matt Smith clone.
You gotta wonder why they didn't call it something else more marketable to the US masses, instead of a show named after someone completely unrelated (though the real Dirk might disagree with it being unrelated).
I loved it personally.
Great acting, lots of funny dialogue. Some of the moments are very memorable, which will probably give it a "cult classic" status after some time.
No. Wouldn't recommend it to someone who actually likes the work of Douglas Adams.
