Speculating on pararibulitis

So, Todd's sister has pararibulitis (a fictitious disease that is hereditary). He supposedly had the disease also and cleaned out his parents savings for meds while he was in college. Based on his sketchiness when questioned about his cure, I assume he was lying about having the disease to scam money from his parents, but what was he using the money for? Drugs? Gambling? He's surely hiding something. I'm guessing he's paying for his sisters meds out of guilt.

good call on Todd appearing to be hiding something. In my viewing I largely just glossed over it but I think you're right about it probably playing a role going forward.

we know he wasn't above breaking and entering and theft, possibly cashing in a lottery ticket that isn't his very soon. Dirk did mention that what the universe gives Todd he may not necessarily -what was it- earn or deserve?

if you don't have anything nice to say ...you're probably a butthole

That was exactly my thought.

One of the previews talked about him being in a previously famous but failed band (he's wearing the t-shirt - "Mexican Funeral") so my guess is that he spent the money trying to get it off the ground. That or his "meds" were drugs. Guilt seems to be his motivation though. Guilt for scamming the money and for giving his sister false hope.

In episode 3, he arrives at the police station voluntarily, at which point they bring up that his band "Mexican Funeral" had filed a report about stolen band equipment... equipment the police know that Todd stole, sold, and then reported $4000 of stuff stolen. He says "I was going through a rough time." While his parents backed up his story about his disease, Todd seemed very sketchy about the whole line of questioning.

I have no enemies, but am intensely disliked by my friends.

I thought he just didn't think he was cured, seeing how day before he saw himself in the hallway, he probably thinks he's getting sick again. That's making him think you can't get well and neither will she

But you may be right, what Elijah says here kinda clicks with your theory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTr2s9Strjc

reply

This is also what I thought. His guilt was from lying about being cured, therefore the false hope.

reply

I did consider that he might still have the disease, but he was too shifty when questioned about it, so it seems less likely. I like this band idea, that he took the money to fund his band and likely flunked out of college. I really hope the band is called Mexican Funeral. That is an excellent name for a crappy college party band.

reply

I also thought that he was not cured and was fighting through it to give his sister hope. But never having it in the first place would make sense too.

reply

I'm even more certain he was faking it and using the money for something sketchy after the last episode when the cops brought up the incident with his band's instruments and then when his sister asked him if he remembered what the episodes felt like and he was silent. He's clearly hiding something.

reply

Yeah, it was so heavily hinted up until now, that it wouldn't make much of a twist if it turned out to be true.

it seems he did not cash the lottery ticket yet??

reply

If you've watched the end you'll know that...

he faked it, but ended up getting the disease at the end of the series.
