some good performances marred by too much nonsense

All the silly, supernatural/sci-fi stuff is ruining the show. Sure, Dirk needs to live in a crazy world but the amount of goofy crap is piling on so much that I don't care how it all will supposedly make sense later on. And I'll bet nothing will be answered at season's end, just a cliffhanger to keep us watching next year, don't think I'll be there.

Can I assume then that you have not read too much of Douglas Adams writings?

His stuff is fun and doesn't hit you with it all at once. I doubt Adams would like this show. It really has nothing to do with his work with the exception of Dirk who feels like the secondary character to Todd anyway.

I'm LOVIN' IT!!

I'm loving it too. If it didn't have those crazy, supernatural, sci-fi stuff, then it would be the same old stuff.

Amen. It's Douglas Adams. It's supposed to have crazy, supernatural, sci-fi stuff.

Have you read Adams? His stuff is about the absurdity of the universe but it has an internal logic to it. It's not 50 competing plotlines trying to out do each other. And Dirk was not a CIA experiment. Doug is rolling in the grave at this one.

I disagree, Adam. It's quintessentially Adams.

Yes. Exactly like this show.

It's not 50 competing plotlines trying to out do each other.

There's only one plotline. The seemingly disparate plots all come together in the end.

And Dirk was not a CIA experiment.

He's not in the show either. He was taken by the CIA as part of a special project, but they didn't make him what he is.

Get back to me when you figure out what absurdist comedy is. It was Adams bread and butter.

I agree completely. I'm still in the beginning of the series, so my opinion could change, but there is way too much stuff that feels wacky for the sake of wacky. The moronic CIA assassin accidentally killing people. The insane landlord. The randoms who trash the apartment. The holistic assassin. It's not funny; it's not interesting; it's not realistic--as far as I can tell it's just contrived puzzle pieces in a too-elaborate story.

If this is the story Adams wrote, then either it's a bad story or it doesn't translate to screen well (either by its nature or due to a poor adaption). Period.

I love wild, "out there" sci-fi (Hitchhiker's Guide and John Dies At The End Series come to mind), but the story, structure, and characters of Dirk Gently are more annoying than anything else.
