Question (spoilers)

When the count tells Hideko about the plan, she doesn't want to flee away with him because she's afraid her uncle would get her. Then what's the point about the plot to switch identity with a maid, surely the uncle would find out the girl in the asylum isn't Hideko.

reply

Fair question for Hideko, but the guy seemed to all along plot the girl's death in the asylum. So he at least knew it wouldn't really be a problem.

At part 1, Lady Hideko was portrayed as an innocent woman all the way until the the last twist at the mental asylum. I think Part 2 reveals her dark and cruel side. Her plan of incarcerating a handmaiden to a mental hospital is just one of her evil deeds in Part 2.

Also, her uncle has threatened to put her (or her aunt) in a mental asylum since she was a kid. So that place has a special meaning to her. When she elopes with Count Fujiwara, she wants to be born again as a new person by putting her old 'Hideko' in a mental asylum. That's the reason why she wants to put a handmaiden in the name of Hideko.

But after meeting Sook-hee, a new handmaiden, Lady Hideko is attracted to her and they fall in love, and the story takes a sharp turn.

I think the plan was to escape somewhere by the time he finds out. They had to go to Japan to claim the inheritance. After that, they could leave anywhere. If the uncle knew she was in asylum, he wouldn't be looking for the 2 of them, while they were making their escape.

Truth is, you're Donny and I'm Walter.
But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be The Dude.

OK, see if you can follow: Hideko was terrified of the Basement, where her Uncle would take her if she tried to run away. THE UNCLE HAD KILLED HER AUNT AND THEN "HANGED" HER (remember when, as a little girl, Hideko asked, How come her tongue wasn't hanging out and she didn't soil her pants as a corpse is supposed to look like if it's been hanged? That was when he first showed Hideko saw the Basement and when the Uncle killed her aunt after she was caught running away.)

So, when the Count wanted Hideko to escape with him, she was scared. And the Count promised her a liquid in a small blue capsule. He said something like, Five drops will knock you out. The entire contents will kill you. Therefore, Hideko knew she would be able to kill herself before her Uncle tortured her in the basement. She agreed. The Count said he would give it to her as a wedding gift.

Remember when Hideko handed the Count his wedding ring? And then she held her hand out, waiting? We thought, Oh, she's just waiting for HER ring--but why would her outstretched hand be palms up (waiting) rather than palms down (as if he could slip the ring on her finger). He reached into his pocked for the capsule and gave it to her. She clutched it and smiled.

THAT is how she felt safe fleeing the wicked Uncle. AND that is the liquid she used to knock out the Count later on their trip...leading to the Count's capture.
