What was Lena's part in the story?

I could be wrong, but I think that the film would have played out in the exact same way if Lena wasn't a part of it. Hans would still have gotten caught, he would still have been in the stadium, he would still have been sent to the camp. Lena had no part in this. Also, Lena didn't come up with an escape plan, she had to rely on Hans for that.

To me it looks like her only contribution in the film was to be the eyes of the audience. Like a fresh to gaze to examine life in the camp. I read somewhere that Emma Watson wanted to play the part of Lena because in this film the female character rescues the male. But the way I saw it, she didn't rescue Hans. If anything, she only got herself into more and more trouble and Hans succesfully got her out of it.

Again, I might be dead wrong in all of this. What do you think?

Just finished watching and that was my take-away as well in regards of the Lena character. She basically had zero plan for an escape and she always appeared to be getting into trouble or just coming across as suspicious to Paul Schäfer. Lena only really helped before the airport scene. Lena telephoned / contacted her male friend the pilot (Roman Breuer) with the long hair to arrange a seat for her and Hans. As far as the plot goes that was the only major contribution she provided towards their escape. None of which would have happened without the assistance of Hans and his discovery of the underground tunnels below the Colonia Dignidad compound. I don't fault Emma Watson for the lack of contribution towards the escape from the Colonia Dignidad compound but the writers and script itself.

I didn´t really see it like "it was pointless to have her because it would play out the same way", but more like that it was a love story, that her love made her to go find him and re-unite with him. That she isn´t willing to get into trouble for some political cause but she is for love.
All his friends didn´t want to go find him and to bring him back, only she was willing to, because she loved him.
And I could be wrong, but he found out that escape route only because Lena told him to meet her at that place. We see the scene that he was never appointed for night duty, so probably he would have never had a reason to ask for night duty and to stumble upon that escape route. Maybe a different one, but we can´t say and also how long that would have taken him we don´t know either.

I also wanted to say that it´s a stretch for Emma to think that the female character rescues the male, mainly because Daniel/Hans is a crafty man, he isn´t some damsel in distress. Like I said, to me it looked like a love story from the beginning that she´s willing to get into trouble to re-unite with him and than they both save each other (because Lena too contributed in some parts).
I think that if Emma wants a role where a female character rescues the male one, she should seek films for example like this one http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2101570/?ref_=nv_sr_1, or i don´t know, being a popular kid in school who saves a male kid from bullying etc.

Well without Lena, Daniel would never have found the tunnel as he wouldn't even be at the barn.

He also wouldn't have escaped Chile as the plane wouldn't have taken off. The pilot would not know him and would have remained on the ground when the police cancelled their flight. It was because of Lena that he took off anyway.

So it wouldn't have ended up the same way without Lena. Daniel would have died at the camp.

He wouldn't have even had access to that flight if it weren't for Lena. He would have had to wait for a week for the flight that the (despicable) Germans lied about and would have been re-caught by Pius.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

Lena's part was that she blabbed about Doro and got her beaten.

kjmansvelt have you ever loved anyone or are you just cold and emotionless/incapable of love? Her part of the story was that she wanted to save her boyfriend or whatever but yes there was only so much she could do. Have you not seen people try to save people but not be capable of it? I have heard many stories right in my hometown where people try to save someone drowning and drown themselves. She wasn't just there to look at. She was a caring, loving person who lost a loved one under some extreme circumstances and went to some extremes to find him. Also let us get this straight in that she knew the pilot of one of the planes and that is what saved their butts in the end so yeah she did play a role of more than just a pretty face on screen.
