Great Film, Question about the Cult Leader

According to the end credits this film is based on real life events. They mention the guy died in prison in 2004 but never say anything about his time in New York as a prominent bandleader on the Letterman show. Strange they would leave this out.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
