I know that America wasn't really on good terms with Chile because of Soviet Relations, but I'm not sure if they closed the Embassy down. But, what about the UK embassy. I don't get why the trusted the Germans to take all of their information to.
Uhmmmm.. because they were Germans?! Both Lena and Daniel (although most of the people in Colonia Dignidad also). I don't know if you caught that, but as he is being tortured, Daniel says in Spanish "soy aleman!" which means "I'm German", Lena is working for Lufthansa (a German airline).. plus they have German names..
It was easy to think that, because they were both speaking in an English accent.
My guess is that they let the actors speak in an English accent because that was natural and easy for Emma Watson, and the German accent would have been difficult to pull off. Nothing worse in a movie than a bad accent that is supposed to be a native tongue accent...
Yeah some people don't speak Spanish and had to kind of intuit what was being said by the few broken words we know. All nationalities of the world aren't commonly known. They never said so in English. The Lufthansa thing should have tipped me off but I haven't been back to Europe in a while so kind of missed it. Might have worked better if they used German actor/actress without as much name power.
Bruhl is a German actor and assumed he was playing German in the film due to goo his accent and since they repeatedly said it. Watson otoh, I thought was English.
You're kind of harsh. This movie sucked so bad that it wasn't as evident as it should have been. The nationality of the characters should have been easily apparent, but with the female having a distinct British accent, it wasn't. Had the Chileans spoke only Spanish and the Germans spoke German it would have been far more effective. Less wooden acting would have helped too.

Chile was an ally of the United States during the Cold War. America and Chile were on fantastic terms and if they had gone to the American Embassy the CIA agents stationed there probably would have taken even more extreme measures than the Germans did and they well might have ended up in a ditch.
And did they go to the democratic or federal germany embassy?
Federal Embassy. They were West Germans. East Germans would not have been allowed to work for Lufthansa or travel the world at their leisure as an independent journalist under the Iron Curtain.

More extreme measures. US embassy requires Americans to tell them or state department their travel plans if they are traveling to dangerous country. If Americans got into trouble like in this film and they have armed guard from the time they entered the embassy to until they are safely on the plane.
Simple answer is that they would have been treated pretty badly. Because the U.S. was friendly with Pinochet, Daniel and Lena would have been treated like criminals and handed back over to Colonia Dignidad.
Also, they would have been turned away from the American embassy because neither of them was American.
He meant as Germans to the American Embassy. Even as Americans they would have had major issues because of the pictures and what they knew. The US isn't as saintly as you would like to believe.

What are you talking about?
I assume that by "America" you mean USA. Well, you should make a little Google research and you'll find out that it was USA who supported the cuop and right-wing military dictatorship in Chile. Yes, USA were "besties" with chilean Junta. It is public knowledge that the CIA supported the coup in Chile.
And seems you didn't pay attention, the characters are Germans.
Greetings from a chilean.
Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language reply share
Just an FYI, to the rest of the world (especially Spanish-speaking countries), "America" means fron Alaska to the Patagonia, i.e. the entire continent.
It is just that the United States OF America approriated the term to refer to itself and its people. It is equivalent to Nigeria wanting to call themselves "Africa" when they are clearly NOT the entire continent.
They would need new passports to leave the country and you usually get those from the embassy of the country of your birth, in their case was Germany unfortunately.
