I did a mini-marathon of all the episodes starting on Friday (I still have the entire S1 on my DVR), so I only got to see the new one today. Dislike the new opening, but the show is lovely and sexy and stylish and so smart!
When you watch several episodes in a row (especially the second time), you discover all kinds of neat connections, references, allusions, and details. This series is a whole lot better, more tightly written than most stuff on TV. Literally every single episode contributes to the overall story arc. There is not a single story (even those that may seem to you like a 'monster-of-the-week' cheapie at first sight) that is not referenced later on, or does not create consequences they deal with in future stories. (Even in tiny things, like Johnny Jaqobis using the same expression that the hacker girl introduced to him in the previous episode, showing how he learns from every problem he ever comes across.) The characters may be formulaic a 'hint', and the budget is sure as heck pedestrian, but the creators have crafted a well-thought-through, nicely detailed, and intriguing universe. There seem to be some really smart and talented people working on this show, especially in writing.
I cannot help but feel a bit giddy with excitement about it. It's almost like good-ol'fashioned Golden Age space opera has come to life again: it's paperback, cheap-looking, and rather well-worn at the corners, but it's colourful, full of imagination, with some new takes on old ideas, and a youthful spirit that is just plain refreshing.
Besides, guessing what planet/city/club the abandoned quarry/cement factory will stand in for this week also makes a great drinking game...
