I think it has to do with the experiments that were done on D'avin in the military. Maybe they did more than just mind control experiments.

That was my first thought too but then I read a theory that D'Avin was the monk that came back. I don't know how that would work, other than reincarnation, but it's an intriguing idea for sure.
