Gabe was a real jerk
He lied about caitlyn being his daughter, and cheated on his wife while she was in the hospital, he deserved to have his stupid guitar smashed to pieces, the bastard!

shareI agree with you guys completely. All the time I was watching the movie, the clues were there but I wanted to think he was an "innocent." When it came to the big reveal, I wanted to imagine him finally going, "April Fools!" and have all the people and cameras come out. Mean, yes, but at least it would've made him innocent. When I saw him kiss her on the lips in the record store, I said to the screen, "You son of a bitch! You bastard" I was genuinely shocked and disgusted with him. For everything Jennifer Beals did to him at the end, I was behind her all the way. I remember even saying when they (Liz and AJ) told him to leave, "Take Barbie with you!" I must say though that he certainly can pick them.
All of a sudden I'm thinking, "Why didn't he just try the "Deny, deny, deny" bit done by Joey Bishop in "A Guide For The Married Man?" I know it wouldn't have worked. I'm just trying to make a funny.
Its been awhile since I watched this movie but did Liz's husband Gabe have something to do w/her breakdown in the first place? I'm positive Gabe was gas lighting her (from the very beginning, b/c Gabe was a DICK!) especially w/her projects she worked so hard on for work suddenly "disappearing" and other "unusual things" happening to Liz which made her have a breakdown. If I remember correctly it was never brought up in the movie that Gabe actually was the one who did in fact cause her breakdown. I mean this lovely wife bought this expensive guitar for him, and only did things to make that snake of a husband happy; he was a bum w/no ambitions and in my opinion was just a pathetic leech; Liz deserved a better man who would love her and not use her like Gabe has done all those years. Her son treated her like crap but that was also the husband's fault b/c he "cautiously" made sure that AJ blamed his mother for everything, and the dad would always be the "good guy" in his eyes; he let the son do whatever he wanted, while Liz was just trying to be a good parent/mother and connect w/her son but couldn't do so b/c Gabe had their son AJ brainwashed to hate the mother. I knew a about 10 minutes when the movie started that Gabe was not to be trusted - something about him and then this young chick claiming to be his daughter BAM!! Also, to the OP - yes Gabe is a real jerk.
