It's self-defense because:
1. The boyfriend went on the neighbor's property (trespassed) and,
2. Began threatening violence towards the neighbor and,
3. The neighbor warned the boyfriend to leave, then pulled his firearm and fired a warning shot. According to the neighbor and what was shown on the program, the boyfriend not only did NOT heed the warning, but charged the neighbor -- an action that the neighbor (and the average person) interpreted as an intent to cause bodily harm. The neighbor had a right to protect himself.
Reasons listed under number 3 is enough to claim self-defense, but when you add numbers 1 and 2, it's clear the woman's boyfriend was or of control and in the wrong in so many ways. He trespassed. He threatened violence. He charged towards the guy to commit violence.
