Night of the machete

James was an instigating *beep* and deserved the ass-whooping he got. His girlfriend wasn't much better. I don't believe most of what those people said. If you want to crank your radio and be loud as hell, then buy a house, don't live in an apartment. The neighbor with the barking dog was annoying, too. Who wants to hear that all day? The whole situation could have been avoided if that fat *beep* couple would have been considerate people and not started the whole feud.

They never said that they were innocent plus barking dogs and loud music at times is something you have to deal with no matter where you live nothing these people did constituted having their doors kicked in and a crazy guy coming after them with a machete or getting pounded over music. If you get that worked up over loud music and barking dogs then I suggest living in a shed in the woods all alone

I said he deserved the initial beating, not what happened after that. And barking dogs are extremely annoying. Twain had lived there the longest, I believe, and no one had a problem with him until the guy was an a-hole with his music.

reply

I'm sure there probably were problems with others that just weren't mentioned in the show.

Twain had lived there previously, and then moved out for several years after being deployed, before coming back. The neighbor across the hall (with the sword collection) said he wasn't the same person he had been when living there before. He said there had never been issues with Twain in the past.

The new couple downstairs were already living in the building when Twain moved back in the second time.

reply

Thank you for clarifying that.

reply

Just because your neighbor's music is loud doesn't justify you entering his house without permission and physically assaulting him. The bottom line is that Twain was not mentally stable, something would have set him off eventually. If it hadn't been the music and the dog, it would have been something else.

reply

It seems we disagree.

reply

First off... I don't support Twain beating James up for music or for the machete attack.

That being said... These young people are neighbors I HATE. Music is one thing, but they seemed to go out of their way to push it with this guy. Music doesn't bother me, it's the willful disrespect that would piss me off.

And the barking dog... again not the end of the world, but pretty annoying. Why own a dog if you're going to leave it inside all day while at work? That didn't seem like the best idea.

I used to work from home, so loud music and dogs barking and whining can get pretty annoying. I mean, if my neighbors are doing their best then I won't let it get to me. It's the intentional childish stuff that was displayed that would piss me off. Not to that extent, but I get why people would be upset.

They didn't mention this in the show, but he was a veteran. Maybe some of these issues were related to PTSD or something like that? I would like to know more about it. Is he just an *beep* Or was he acting out because of some untreated issue?

I think he belongs in prison, but I would like to know what fueled this.

reply

I don't think he necessarily 'deserved' the beating but, he and his idiot girlfriend definitely started things. He knew exactly what he was doing and he continued it, by playing the music at excessive levels. What did he expect the outcome to be? He even angered cop by acting like a spoiled brat and got a citation for his behavior. You can't have neighbors that close to you and try and live like you're on a deserted island. People deserve peace and quiet. The girl with the dog didn't irritate me as much because she didn't do anything intentionally...and I love dogs! But a barking/yapping dog, all day, every day, would be very unnerving. Twain clearly came home with some issues (ptsd?) and perfect silence wouldn't have been enough but he was living with "children" all around him who had no respect for others.

Perhaps he didn't deserve it, but I definitely understood the neighbor's frustration. I have a dog, too, and if she barks for more than about 5 minutes I bring her inside. I think it's inconsiderate to neighbors not to do so.

reply

Dogs are my whole world and they don't typically bother me, no matter what they're doing. That being said, I know that is just me-most people are very annoyed by a noisy dog. When mine start barking just because they're wound up I make them come inside. I never want my neighbors to have a reason to dislike my dogs!

reply

The man clearly had a severe case of PTSD, and the barking dog and loud music was aggravating it. Was he given any counseling after his deployment? No matter what, physically assaulting James wasn't justified and he should have faced some kind of charges for that. Maybe the judge would have ordered him to get some counseling to deal with his problems and things wouldn't have exploded like they did.

reply

They pointed out that when Twain had lived there before that most or all of the residents were close to Twains age so I think he had gotten used to that environment and "expected" it to be the same when he got home. While serving he probably looked forward to the day he got back to what he thought would be the home he always knew. But as one poster pointed out, this tragedy was going to happen at some point. It could have been a noisy car motor, honking, screaming kids, running chainsaws, whatever. Once he got that termination of benefits letter (oddly with no reason why) from the VA, there was no looking back.
I would really be interested to find out more about this case. It definitely doesn't feel as though we got the whole story, though admittedly, no finishing pieces to it or holes filled in would ever justify Twains final rampage, despite how frail he sounded in the video after being shot.
On another note, I am very sad Fear thy Neighbor season has ended and is replaced next week by "I am Homicide." Ugh. I have no desire to watch it and it won't hold a candle to the juggernaut that FTN has become. ID is just trying to capitalize on Kendamania and I don't see it happening!

reply

Oh, no, I am sad to hear that...FTN is one of my favorite shows, even with it's cheap production.
Poor Twain, I kind of felt bad for him even though what he did was very wrong. Apartment living is only for the young. I remember what a relief it was when we moved into our first house and could play music, have pets and a garage w plenty of parking...

reply

Yeah this was the season finale and I didn't find out until after I had watched it. Right now there is nothing on ID that I'm watching which has never happened, so I'm going to need either a new show to appeal to me or the season premiere of one of the older ones.

At first I didn't agree with the OP, but the more we discussed it the OP is basically right. If I were to move into an apartment, I'd pretty much know that any kind of loud music is out of the question. And especially after he tried to vandalize his Cadillac he came off as immature. And he turned the music up on numerous occasions. You can listen to music but at an acceptable level. Lastly, they were probably the last couple to move in. To me, seniority means something. Even in a regular neighborhood.

Maybe it doesn't deserve for a beating but in the real world, what do you expect? Especially with someone ex-military?

And I think that the loud music was the impetus for him going crazy and going into the dog lady's apartment, as the OP stated. Maybe if the noise incident had happened he'd acted differently towards the other neighbors.

That guy is lucky he had a videotape because the way things were you never know how the situation would have ended after the incident when it went to the courts.

Lastly, I've learned my lesson to stick to myself no matter a neighborhood or apartment complex. Becoming "friends" just seems to end badly a lot of the time. Be friendly ? Sure. When my dog goes outside late at night he used to sometimes bark, and if he did I went straight to the door and told him to get inside now. And he did. Miss him just writing this. But same thing goes for my other dog, but she rarely barks.

I felt a little bad for the loud music couple first time I saw the episode, less the second time.

reply

I also don't condone or excuse what he ended up doing but the kid was a complete and utter D-bag! I mean a grade A Ahole who pushed this guy over and over agian. The chick with the dog was also only on the music guys side because she knew that her dog whined all day and never seemed to take any action to try to fix that. I'm guessing he had PTSD and that will make his senses go on overload so all the sounds that other people are just annoyed by are going to be amplified to him. It's just a sad story all around, I wonder if things would have gone differently if his neighbors had tried to be courteous to a man who had served this country.

reply

Well put. Could it be so bad to ask "let me know if my music is too loud or at what level is acceptable." And the guy actually had a decent idea with the dog...turn a radio on (not too loud) to kinda drown it out a bit or soothe the dog. It's hard for me to take sides because none of us will a EVER know the TrUE story but it sounds like before the young couple with the music moved in the guy had NO problems living there. Like I said before, when I move to a "new" area I feel the neighbor's have seniority and to try my best not to bother their way of life. And after awhile I've been living somewhere for years and when a new neighbor moves in and doesn't seem to care about the way things are and want to do whatever they want, whenever they want...yeah, I get offended. Me and other neighbor's have sort of "ganged" up on the "youngster" that moved across the street cause he felt like he could make noise (and I mean noise..none of use were prudes by ANY stretch of the imagination) to make him/her realize this isn't cool. How would you like your calm neighborhood being interrupted one day by a new guy who stands outside with friends till 4AM listening to loud music and peeling out and crap?

The more I think about it the more I feel the music guy pushed his buttons till he snapped. And obviously Twain wasn't the only one who didn't like the loud music...
