At first I didn't agree with the OP, but the more we discussed it the OP is basically right. If I were to move into an apartment, I'd pretty much know that any kind of loud music is out of the question. And especially after he tried to vandalize his Cadillac he came off as immature. And he turned the music up on numerous occasions. You can listen to music but at an acceptable level. Lastly, they were probably the last couple to move in. To me, seniority means something. Even in a regular neighborhood.
Maybe it doesn't deserve for a beating but in the real world, what do you expect? Especially with someone ex-military?
And I think that the loud music was the impetus for him going crazy and going into the dog lady's apartment, as the OP stated. Maybe if the noise incident had happened he'd acted differently towards the other neighbors.
That guy is lucky he had a videotape because the way things were you never know how the situation would have ended after the incident when it went to the courts.
Lastly, I've learned my lesson to stick to myself no matter a neighborhood or apartment complex. Becoming "friends" just seems to end badly a lot of the time. Be friendly ? Sure. When my dog goes outside late at night he used to sometimes bark, and if he did I went straight to the door and told him to get inside now. And he did. Miss him just writing this. But same thing goes for my other dog, but she rarely barks.
I felt a little bad for the loud music couple first time I saw the episode, less the second time.
