Flop or just below expectations?

The box office results of the movie are below the studio expectations but does that mean the movie is a straight up flop?

reply

Below expectations. Too much competition. They should have released this in February. Why these companies think that people only want to see movies in May-August and an occasional December is the main question to ask.

People were burned after the first one, so of course they were going to avoid this one. However, it turned out to be SIGNIFICANTLY better than the first one, which was absolutely unwatchable. This one seems to be having a much better word of mouth, and if they go for a third, which I hope they do, I think it will be better received.

I think it did as poorly as it could have. The most worrisome thing about the film's performance is that it had harsh drops from the first film in a lot of overseas markets. I think the performance was bad enough to end the series. I would be surprised if a direct sequel is ever made.

Based on the Rule of Thumb, Break Even point is roughly 260 Million Dollars if it doesn't make it to that point (and I don't think it will) I'd say this movie is a Flop. It's certainly a Box Office Disappointment

This film lost the studio a lot of money as it couldn't even double its production budget. Factor in the theatres cut and a marketing budget and this film lost 10's of millions of dollars, it's a flop.
