Will there be a 3rd movie in the series ?

Really hope there will. 2nd one was better than the first

It sits on 235 million WW right now

No! It was a miserable failure. Just like you. 

I think the series is pretty well dead. Another TMNT movie will happen but it won't be connected to these films.

reply

You're correct. the next TMNT movie won't be related to the Platinum Dunes' TMNT movies and the Golden Harvest TMNT movies. it would begin with Hamato Yoshi discovered four baby turtles crashed through the sewer 15 years earlier then flash forward to present where the Turtles already continue their crime-fighting activities in the dark.

I'd disagree that Out of the Shadows was better than the 2014 but then they are both pretty that it's not worth debating it.

But nope. I don't see a third movie for this, the first barely made a profit and the sequel has lost money.

Sadly I'm not sure we'll get a reboot any time soon either if ever. I can imagine that studios will look at TMNT as a property that doesn't lend itself to live action theatrical releases and just never bother.

I think there will be a third movie. They might not break even with the box office but the movieis also a huge commercial for merchandise and stuff which will make up for it

reply

But the movie did break even with the box office. The budget was roughly $134mil and it's box office is $235mil

reply

That s just production budget. You forgot the marketing budget. And half of the box office money goes to the cinemas. On the other hand paramount will earn from home video sales. To break even the movie needs to gross at least 270.
But I still have no worries. Merchandising brings in a lot of money.

You're right, especially for a franchise like this. Kids will wanna buy the toys and own the movie to watch at home. You can't blame the millions of parents out there that would so much rather buy them a dvd of this movie and some toys, rather than pay to sit in a theater and actually be forced to watch for two hours. If you're not a TMNT fan already, this movie would be unbearable to those types of people/parents.

I'm hoping that between almost breaking even at BO, popularity of the Nick show, and home video and merchandise sales--this can get a third film. It was a vast improvement of the first movie. I could see the third making more money if they release it in a better, less crowded month. I think the first was a financial success because it came out in August. This one came out in June and there were just way too many other movies out that people wanted to see more. Especially movies for kid's. This was no match for Finding Dory.

Why are people still putting forth this myth that there are extenuating circumstances for this flopping? Blockbusters these days are spread out throughout the year, there is no point this year it wouldn't have competition but bare in mind the period it released wasn't so bad in this respect.

It's biggest competitor released a week before X-Men: Apocalypse had lackluster results so that didn't get in the way. It had two whole weeks to dominate before Finding Dory was released and even then good word of mouth would have had them pulling decent numbers against it just like the previous movie did when Guardians regained the top spot.

For my money there's a few reasons why the first movie pulled in decent numbers whereas the sequel has not even come close to breaking even. While many fans where upset at news of the movie's production and the trailers that showed how it was deviating from any version of the canon most of the movie going public who aren't TMNT fans didn't care about that. What they saw was TMNT being given similar treatment to many of the popular comic book movies right now. The finished result wasn't exactly that but that was the selling point.

By comparison fans...or more accurately a sub section of fans may have been hyped for this movie so strongly pulling from the Fred Wolf animated series but why would non-TMNT fans give a crap about this? Why would they go to a movie which was being sold as deliberately stupid? Platinum Dunes vastly overestimated the appeal of the 80s animated series and their ultra goofy approach.

It could have gotten decent word of mouth to give it legs but the fact is the movie itself is awful. Apart from the inclusion of the Fred Wolf characters how is it any improvement on the previous awful movie? If the narrative structure of the previous movie was disjointed then this one is all over the place and the attempts to give the turtles a character arc was shallow and highlighted the writers don't "get" these characters.

What was the point of casting a noted character actor as the Shredder when he doesn't do anything? What was the point of including Casey Jones when he doesn't have any of Casey's history or personality. These were two big inclusions people were banking on and they were huge let downs.

If you a big Fred Wolf fan or just someone who likes to turn their brain off and enjoy the big action scenes then this movie was also a huge let down. At some point you wanted the turtles to actually fight the Foot, you wanted to see them fight Bebop and Rocksteady for more than a few seconds and certainly the battle with Krang and the Technodrome had to be more than just the turtles dodging things in incomplete lego Deathstar. This movie didn't even please the lowest common denominators and very much deserved the poor results it got.

I highly doubt home media sales will be that big and even if the are movies like Dredd make a killing on DVD and Blu Ray and yet no one is making a sequel even with Karl Urban doing his best to promote any kind of continuation. This movie series has been a massive headache for everyone involved, why would anyone want to see it continue if it's not making money?

reply

If the Blu-ray and DVD sales and rentals are strong enough I can see a third movie in this canon happening.
