A great film!
It's rated 7.2 on Netflix, but I give it a 9!
π
It was quite a good war movie, it was pitiful how the UN Irish unit was supplied though
Air support, artillery and a steady supply of mortar and small arms ammo would have made burnt bread of the enemy, they seemed pretty crappy as a large force
Actually all they needed was air support. As they say, if at first you don't succeed, call in an air strike!
:-)
I watched this because you gave it the 'thumbs up'
It was a very good movie, much obliged for the recommendation
You're welcome, Amigo. That's one of the best things about a movie chat board. Giving and getting recommendations.
There are some movies which I really like (like this one) which I had never heard of before I got a recommendation.
Truly amazing that not a single Irish soldier was killed!
π
Indeed it was
They lost a few Indian Allies from what I read
Another good war picture you may enjoy is Danger Close: The Battle Of Long Tan based on a true story of a small Aussie force battling wave after wave of Vietnamese communists
Pretty hair raising and amazing that those tough fellows pulled through and gave hell to an overwhelming enemy force
*Artillery was a major factor
I had never heard of it, so I checked it out. It looks good, so I just added it to my Netflix list. Thanks for the recommendation. That's one of great things about movie chat boards, giving and getting recommendations.
BTW, have you seen We Were Soldiers? It's a very good film about a similar situation when a 400 man American unit in Vietnam is surrounded and attacked by 2,000 bad guys. In this case, air power played an important role. It's rated 7.2 on IMDb, but I give it a 7.8.
π
Yes!
2002, Mel Gibson, that was a really good one
Fine movie
I absolutely LOVED when the Huey charged in at the last moment and mowed down those fucking
Commie Bastards! I actually CHEERED out loud!
π
A common link in all of these true war movies we have discussed...The first casualty of war is 'the plan'
Everything just goes sideways for these guys every time
*edit: The Blackhawk Down mission was supposed to be a snatch and grab of a really bad guy and that just went all to hell
Yes. The "plan" goes into the toilet when you encounter the enemy.
π
Have you seen Rzhev: The Unknown Battle?
Very similar situation. It's a tough movie to track down but well worth a watch, along with Panfilov's 28.
I checked on Netflix, and they have no record of it. I'm having trouble signing into IMDb right now. Can you give me some more details? General plot, length, viewer reviews, external reviews etc.
π
Yeah sure. Rzhev's IMDB page is here:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11426562/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dt#akas
It's about a group of Russian soldiers who have to take and occupy a small village from a ruthless group of German soldiers who NEED that village as a pivotal point to further their march toward Stalingrad. Short on supplies and men, the Russians have to hold out while running out of food supplies, and not being able to sleep due to constant barrage of attacks by the Germans.
It released in 2019, is around 2 hours or so.
As for Pnfilov's 28, it's very much like Rzhev, here is the IMDB page:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5207204/
A small band of Russian soldiers must intercept a large battalion of German tanks. They have to rely on wits, positioning, and weather to help them withstand the assault.
It's an extremely intense movie about how utilizing terrain and terrain positioning is absolutely vital when engaging enemies who far out-number you.
Okay then. Thanks.
