If Ego is Immortal... Why did he age?

Ok, so, if Ego is immortal, and he can create literally anything, including a humanoid being he uses to converse with other humanoid beings... Why did it age after 34 years?

And another thing, if Quill was immortal, would he just continue going until he become a shriveled up old man or, do you stop aging after a certain point? I mean, Ego looked like he was pushing 66 years.

reply

I think they're immortal in that they could continually recreate their bodies, not that they're ageless. Ego's body seems to be harmed just like a human's body, he just grows a new one. I think it aged naturally over that time becaus eof this.

he only chose to look older because he thought thought appearance would be the best for convincing peter. he couldve looked like anything, david hasselhoff for example

reply

Which would explain that David Hasselhoff bit in the movie...

So, the idea is that they would be able to 'rebuild' their bodies, just for the sake of Peter, he chose to age.

reply

He explains it in that Hasselhoff bit. He says he tried hard to find the form that best suited Peter.

reply

I was asking myself the same question today

"he only chose to look older because he thought thought appearance would be the best for convincing peter. he couldve looked like anything, david hasselhoff for example"

^ and this answer makes sense to me...after reading this Im ok with Ego aging

reply

He said something about having the experience of being human... if he didn't progress through the aging process, he would still be a God not a human. As long as that planet stayed intact... he could've made more bodies and inhabited them for eternity but the human tissue would still age.

reply

No, he doesn't age, there's no "human tissue" as he's completely created. He just looks however he wanted to look. Did you miss the parts where his body was completely destroyed, and he re-created it the same way?

reply

Now why would an eternal entity be a brain shaped like ours? Thats what he was in the core.

reply

Maybe our brain is shaped like theirs

(i.e., within this fantasy universe, evolution is directed enough to result in humanoid carbon-based life everywhere, because these celestials guided it all)

reply

I believe Ego's brain had the appearance of a human brain for the audience to identify with. Yes they could have had it look like a door knob or a steak but this worked.

And same goes for Ego's appearance when he was shown with all the other species. From our far away view we can spot him from the hair and the jacket and we relate to the story, but in its reality logically he would have appeared the same as each one of those species we saw him with. Of course they could have shown him in that form just wearing the jacket so we could find him but the short scene was explained clearer for the audience the way it was done.

And I agree he was aged as he was to be what Peter expected.

reply

I think he sort of chose how to appear based on the expectations. Ie when he was wooing Meredith, he appeared as a man close to her age. Whereas when he meets Quill, he knows Quill will be expecting a type of father figure, so he appears as such.

reply

One thing that I remember though, didn't Ego choose to show up to all the other Aliens in the image of Kurt Russel instead of taking on an appearance closer to the species? I remember him showing those models, and they're all images of Human Ego cuddling up with various Aliens.

reply

I'm guessing he only did this for illustrative purposes for the Quill presentation as to not confuse him, but in reality he looked closer to the respective beings each time.

reply

Quill would have had a harder time believing a 30-something looking Kurt Russell was his dad.

And what others have said. :)
