For Those Who Found It Funny...

I'm curious what some of your favorite comedies are. I personally didn't find it funny at all (save for the ridiculously long volley scene which was genuinely hilarious), so I'm wondering if we agree on some other comedies.

I thought they squandered a perfectly good premise by relying solely on raunchy, over-the-top humor. Subtlety, it seems, is no longer part of the comedy equation.

reply

I'd assume most who found it funny find Andy Samberg/Lonely Island funny. It was exactly the sort of project I expected and very much an elongated SNL Digital Short.

While I do think his brand of comedy gets a little extreme at the expense of actual laughs, I thought this movie was hilarious and was grateful for the short run time, this thing could've been dragged out much further.

As for subtlety, I guess it depends on your definition. Samberg's quick line, "Later, tennis," had me rolling, as did the sudden tangent on Swedish court room artists. Everything about Swedish jail was played pretty straight as well. Jim Lampley not really liking tennis, wow that was good.

Anyways, I get it, the humor is not for everyone, ranging from the too weird to the too much nutsack. I loved it and would compare to, I guess, MacGruber or maybe aspects of Walk Hard.

I hate Adam Sandler movies, but found this hilarious.

Unfortunately for the OP, not everything can be as perfect as that gem Shallow Hal.

reply

Kind of like not every imdb commenter can be as condescending as you. Shallow Hal is far from a comedy gem, but it does have its moments.

reply

The whole point of your original post was to be condescending, like only comedies you like can be deemed funny. Get off your high horse you tool.

reply

Perhaps you should go back to school and learn what condescending means. Then take it a step further and learn how to gauge when someone's being condescending. See, now I'm being condescending.

I didn't insult anyone for thinking this was a funny movie, nor do I think they're somehow wrong. I understand that comedy is a matter of a personal opinion, and I was giving my two cents. You disagree, fine.

reply

Of course you did by suggesting anybody who likes this movie is not on your level of comedy. That's the definition of the word you mouth-breathing neanderthal. Go back to watching comedy classics like Shallow Hal and leave your condescending attitude back at your home in your parents' basement. Have a great day.

reply

This is a pointless endeavor, but what kind of loser looks at someone's message board history until they can find a post to use against them? And speaking of the Shallow Hal post, I was simply asking a question about a certain scene. I guess that means it's my all-time favorite comedy now. If you're gonna troll, at least don't be an idiot.

reply

Wah wah. Dry your tears you piece of garbage. Next time think before you post.

Seriously mate? Do you try hard to be so.. "creatively insulting" or are you a natural?
Fanboy : a person who does not think while watching.

It was alright.

I enjoy comedy in general. If it is true about what you the above poster said, I'll say that I found Shallow Hal to be alright.

Comedies that I've enjoyed: Zoolander, Dodgeball, Step Brothers, The Lego Movie... Just to name a few.

TV shows: Archer, Louie, Always Sunny, Rick and Morty...

I found some of it funny, but like snl skits, jokes ran too long. For instance the cgi re-creation was funny for a second but then it just kept going and then the sex on the court just went on way too long and just made me uncomfortable. Also it started off with that cheesy stuff where to somehow make you believe Sandberg is this tennis sensation they have all these news anchors and journalists mentioning his name. I hate when shows/movies do that. It's not necessary and always feels forced because we know it's a show and we know those people are acting rather than reporting news. I'm eclectic when it comes to comedy, from arrested development to curb your enthusiasm, from peep show to tim and eric, I like whatever's creative and funny. Usually this means I like anything on HBO.

The premise itself was great and yeah they squandered it with shock humor rather than really well thought out subtle stuff. They shoulda had mcenroe and roddick help write it or someone that was actually a tennis pro. Instead of having that match take up the entire film it would have been better to see some buildup to it so we could get to know the characters and get some on court arguments and banter. I was hoping it would be somewhere inbetween "eastbound and down" and "gary the tennis coach", but it was a bit of a let down. Instead of a mockumentary we got a spoof. It's essentially a spoof of the Isner-Mahut 3 day Wimbledon match but with a twisted version of an older speed fueled Andre Agassi and a young up and coming Roger Federer. That's atleast how I see it.

Nice reply. We have very similar tastes in seems. Curb, Arrested Development, and Peep Show are three of my favorites. I suppose I'm into more "sophisticated" humor or whatever you want to call it. To each their own.

reply

I understand, I appreciate it all. Things like "the it crowd" "spaced" "wondershowzen", "black books" "green wing" "tim and eric", just blow me away with their creativeness. I enjoy the goofy stuff just as much as the subtle more sophisticated stuff. I can watch the trailer park boys just as easily as seinfeld or silicon valley just as much as it's always sunny or workaholics. "Shameless" is a show airing now that is on another level, hilarious show. "Fresh meat" is extremely funny as well. Shows like "derek" and "last tango in halifax" are well done too even though aimed at the older crowds. Lots of great British comedy as well. I've seen a lot.

Which was most likely the point, so job well done on their part.
